Matthew Lawrence shared his experiences of working with his co-star Ryan Reynolds on the 1998 film, Boltneck.

On the February 21, 2025 episode of the Brotherly Love podcast, which is co-hosted by the Boy Meets World actor and his brothers Joey and Andrew Lawrence, Matthew recalled how it was seemingly difficult for “the production team” to work with him on the film’s set.

“The funny part about it is that the production team was having a really hard time with Ryan,” Matthew said. “And this is young Ryan.”

In the film, Ryan Reynolds played the role of Karl O’Reilly, a character who is brought back to life by Matthew Lawrence's character, Frank Stein, after being killed by bullies.

He then explained that Ryan would walk out and “just wanted to kind of do his thing. And the producers were getting upset.” He remembered the production team told him,

“this is a bad Jim Carrey impersonation. This is not what we hired you to do. You can’t impersonate somebody, you gotta do your own thing.’”

During the February 21, 2025 episode of the Brotherly Love podcast, Matthew Lawrence discussed his experience working with Ryan Reynolds in the 1998 film, Boltneck. He shared that the production team wanted a dark, Donnie Darko-style sci-fi film, but Reynolds was “trying to ‘Deadpool’ the script.”

He further added, that he has now matured as a human being. He also mentioned during the podcast that when he sat in a meeting between Reynolds and the directors, he recalled them saying,

“I can’t believe this guy. We had so much hope for this guy. He’s going nowhere,” according to New York Post.

Matthew Lawrence added with a laugh. “You never know.” Today, Ryan Reynolds is one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood.

Matthew Lawrence claimed that the people who were behind the making of Boltneck blamed Reynolds for the movie “not working.”

“They blamed that movie not working on him because they said there was this whole conflict,” he added, according to the report.

Boltneck is a 1998 film. According to Lawrence’s description in the podcast, it is,

“about a dark kid who sat at the back of the class and got teased all the time by these bullies….and they kill him.”

He added, “I [Lawrence’s character] find him walking home from school and I take him back and resurrect him.” He mentioned that his character is a science nerd.

According to IMDb, Boltneck was directed by Mitch Marcus and John Blush. It starred Matthew Lawrence, Justin Walker, Christine Lakin, and Bianca Lawson.
