The Wild Robot, an animated science-fiction film, was released in September 2024 and is based on the 2016 novel of the same name. The plot revolves around a robot named Roz who crashes on a deserted island and tries to live while bonding with the island's wild creatures. Lupita Nyong'o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Mark Hamill, and Stephanie Hsu lend their voices to various characters in the film. The film was a commercial and critical triumph, earning four Golden Globe nominations and numerous other awards.

Roz, who was originally given the title ROZZUM unit 7134, is the protagonist in both the film and the novel The Wild Robot. While Roz has no pronouns, she often refers to herself in the female tense and is a white humanoid-like robot who is stranded on an island after unforeseen circumstances. There are only animals on the island and Roz attempts to befriend them over the course of the story.
In the movie, Roz’s body is round and can glow in different colors with her default setting set as blue. Her arms can extend and her hands can turn into different tools. She later meets, befriends, and raises Brightbill, an orphaned gosling that she treats as her own child. Over the course of the story, Roz grows beyond her original programming and turns into something akin to a mother for Brightbill. She also develops emotional connections with the gosling alongside several other animals while also getting a better and deeper understanding of nature.
Who voices Roz in the Wild Robot?
Roz is voiced by Mexican-born Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong'o who is best known for her role as Patsey in Steve McQueen's biopic 12 Years a Slave (2013). This was also her first feature film role in which Nyong'o received critical acclaim for her portrayal as well as an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. Aside from this, Nyong'o has also won a Daytime Emmy Award for “Bookmarks: Celebrating Black Voices: Lupita Nyong'o Reads Sulwe”.
The 41-year-old actress has also lent her voice to other roles aside from Roz including portraying Maz Kanata in the Star Wars universe across both the films and the animated television series, as well as Raksha in The Jungle Book (2016).
