Brooks Hatlen is an older inmate who has spent nearly 50 years in Shawshank prison. He is the prison librarian who loves to do his work with dedication and pride. He is gentle, kind-hearted, and also respected by the other inmates. Brooks spends much of his time organizing books and helping fellow prisoners find peace in reading. There is a bird named Jake, whom he really cares about and keeps as a companion. Andy develops a meaningful bond with Brooks when he is appointed as his assistant in the library. Their connection reflects kindness, showing mutual respect in their interactions.

Brooks’ story becomes a heart-breaking depiction of what happens when a person gets used to prison life. He is someone who has spent so long in prison that they can no longer adjust to the outside world. When Brooks is unexpectedly granted parole, he doesn’t feel happiness, it is overshadowed by fear. After 50 years behind bars, the outside world felt overwhelming for him. This leads to a tragic conclusion, where Brooks takes his own life after writing “Brooks was here” on the ceiling of his boarding house. His story is an important reminder of how long-term imprisonment can deeply affect a person’s ability to live in the outside world.
