The celebrity guessing game, The Masked Singer, returned to Fox TV, this Wednesday, September 25, with the 12th consecutive season. The premiere episode introduced viewers to seven new characters, including - Leaf Sheep, Woodpecker, Ship, Showbird, and a Buffalo trio.

While the identity of the other celebrities remains under the vile, Leaf Sheep, was the first to be unmasked this season and was revealed to be John Elway. Dressed like the green and white sea slug, the NFL Hall of Famer performed on Tim McGraw’s 1995 hit, I Like It, I Love It.

The Masked Singer's host, Nick Cannon, did not reveal much about the other characters and only left fans with a bunch of clues to guess the names by next week. The show will return on Wednesday, October 2, with the second episode, Footloose Night.

The Masked Singer Season 12: John Elway's performance, and clues for other potential contestants

John Elway's appearance at The Masked Singer as Leaf Sheep was a surprise as the two-time Super Bowl Champion is rarely seen outside of the field.

Elway has been a football legend but didn't seem to be doing very well with the mic and presented an off-key performance. Joined by two support dancers, he swirled around on the stage in the Leaf Sheep suit while performing I Like It, I Love It.

While the audience and the judges were vibing to the song, they didn't seem very impressed by the performance. John's character, Leaf Sheep, failed to secure enough votes and had to unmask after the early elimination from The Masked Singer. When the suit was removed, Judge Ken Jeong was the only one to have guessed the right name.

As viewers wait for the next episode of The Masked Singer, here are all the clues they may need to guess the names behind the six remaining characters:

1) Buffalo Trio

The winner of the show's fifth season, Nick Lachey, is the ambassador of the Buffalo trio. Nick's first clue hinted one of the buffaloes was the life of his Super Bowl parties and also a national treasure. He said the other buffalo grew up poor and practiced at bus stops.

Sharing visual clues of a crown, and Betty and Vanna White, Nick mentioned the national treasure starred in two sitcoms.

The last clue seemingly hints at Cedric the Entertainer, an original member of the Kings of Comedy who appeared on the screen with Betty White for The Soul Man and Hot in Cleveland crossover.

2) Ship

Jewel, the winner of The Masked Singer's sixth season is the ambassador for Ship. Jewel's first clue was that she shared a great relationship with Ship. Jewel said Ship made history with some of the biggest hits but lost control later on and often felt forgotten. Jewel mentioned that Ship has now made a comeback with the career she always wished for.

The visual clues included an airplane with a clock, an old TV set, and a wanted poster.

The Ship is speculated to either be Annie Lennox or Robin Thicke. While Ship's voice is similar to that of Lennox, the visual of the clock seems to be hinting at Thicke's 2000 hit, Only Time.

3) Showbird

Showbird was introduced to the audience by Joel McHale. Showbird is hinted to have grown up as a nerdy tomboy and has worked in some of the biggest hit movies. Her visual clues included a popcorn bucket, a judge's gavel, and an Advanced Singer 401 textbook.

Seemingly the most obvious contestant this season, the Showbird is speculated to be Yvette Nicole Brown. The nerdy part hints at the several Comic-Con panels Yvete has hosted. She has also appeared as Judge Anita Harper on A Black Lady Sketch, earning herself an Emmy nomination.

4) Woodpecker

Jenifer Lewis introduced Woodpecker to the audience and the judges of The Masked Singer. Jenifer hinted to have known Woodpecker since the start and that she is a young celeb with a world record. Woodpecker is also friends with Beyoncé and plans to become the youngest CEO.

The celeb behind the Woodpecker seems to be Marasai Martin who started her career along with Jenifer Lewis with ABC's show, Black-ish. Martin has her name in the world records as the youngest person to produce a movie. She produced Little at the age of 13 in 2019. Martin also became the CEO of her luxury nail brand, MARI, at 17.

The Masked Singer's 12th season will feature 15 contestants over the coming weeks. Apart from the seven characters who were revealed in the premiere episode, the season also includes - Bluebell, Chess Piece, Dust Bunny, Goo, Strawberry Shortcake, and more.
