The Godfather was a turning point for Francis Ford Coppola’s career. However, Coppola was not the first choice for The Godfather. Sergio Leone was the first choice to direct the film, but he declined the offer to work on his film Once Upon a Time in America. After that, they approached several directors, such as Elia Kazan, Arthur Penn, Peter Yates, and Costa-Gavras, but they all declined the offer. Later, Francis was selected as director of The Godfather because he was young, of Italian descent, and flexible.

During filming, Francis realized that the story was more than just a crime film. It was also about family and a metaphor for capitalism in America. There were some casting disagreements between Francis and Paramount. Francis wanted to cast Marlon Brando as Vito, but Paramount had different options in mind like Ernest Borgnine, Danny Thomas, and Orson Welles. Eventually, Francis was allowed to cast Marlon Brando.

The film was successful at the box office and is now considered one of the greatest films of all time. For this film, Francis won the Academy Award for Best Director.
