According to a report in the BBC, at the age of 18, he inherited a fortune of $600 million from his grandfather, Leo Bing. He pursued his passion for filmmaking after dropping out of Stanford University during his junior year. In 2000, he launched his own production company, Shangri-La Entertainment.

He was a huge supporter of Bill Clinton and reportedly donated at least $10 million to his foundation. He also paid his trip to North Korea in 2009 to negotiate for the release of two US journalists.

Another report in News.com.au stated that he gifted a sculpture of Bob Dylan to Clinton, which was made from tractor parts and worth nearly USD 85,000.

His friends previously described his relationship with his family as strained, particularly with his father, who hasn’t spoken since his death. He is known for his high-profile relationships with celebrities such as Sharon Stone and Elizabeth Hurley.

Bing left his fortune for his two kids, Kira Kerkorian Bing and Damian Hurley. However, they were cut off by Steve Bing’s father, Peter Bing, from the will in which they would have received $250 million each because they were born out of wedlock. Instead, the money went to Steve’s sister Mary’s children, who were given $500 million each because they were born when Mary was married.

Upon his demise, Bing was remembered by Hurley and her son in an emotional social media post. She wrote he was a “sweet, kind man” in her post, along with a series of pictures of their time spent together. Damian shared a picture of a sunset a year after his death in remembrance of his late father.
