Jurassic World: Rebirth is a forthcoming film from the Jurassic World franchise. It also marks the return of David Koepp, the screenwriter who wrote the first film in the franchise. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the film will be released on July 2, 2025, by Universal Pictures.

The official synopsis reads,

Five years post-Jurassic World Dominion, an expedition braves isolated equatorial regions to extract DNA from three massive prehistoric creatures for a groundbreaking medical breakthrough.

Jurassic World: Rebirth is the seventh entry in the overall franchise and the fourth film in the Jurassic World realm. One of the dinosaurs shown in the film is a mutant. This particular species is named the D-Rex.

Let's explore its details.

Which dinosaur in Jurassic World: Rebirth is a mutant?

Jurassic World: Rebirth is going to feature D-Rex, or Diabolus Rex, which is a new kind of mutant dinosaur. It is the creation of scientists who combine the DNA traits of several dinosaurs.

The design of this dinosaur is reportedly inspired by T-Rex, Rancor, and Xenomorph. They were trying to make a clone, and the experiment ended up failing, which resulted in a mutant version of a dinosaur. It consists of four arms and has inherited the rage of a T. rex, while the brain is like a raptor.

A D-Rex also has a capability to disappear as a camouflage and is capable of jaw extension like that of a snake. The trailer showcases that this creature is roaming on the island, which means the protagonist and her team are in real danger.

Gareth Edwards spoke to Vanity Fair earlier, where he mentioned D-Rex and what went into creating the mutant dinosaur.

"Some Rancor went in there, some H.R. Giger went in there, a little T. rex went in there…"

Jurassic World Rebirth is written by David Koepp and directed by Gareth Edwards. Produced by Patrick Crowley and Frank Marshall, the film takes place five years after Dominion. Dinosaurs cannot live on planet Earth, and the last set of them is living in an isolated place. Zora Bennett is a covert operation expert and is heading a team of people on a mission to locate three species of dinosaurs.

Edward spoke to Vanity Fair and went into the details of the film. He said,

"Jurassic Park is a horror film in the witness protection program. Most people don’t think of it like that. We all went to see it as kids. But I was scared shitless, to be honest, when I was at the cinema watching the T. rex attack. It’s one of the most well-directed scenes in cinema history, so the bar’s really high to come on board and try and do this."

In the same interview, Koepp, the writer, confirmed that Jurassic World: Rebirth will have a scene involving a river raft that was supposed to be a part of the original film. It was omitted earlier due to money issues.

The film stars Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett, while Mahershala Ali is Duncan Kincaid. The latter is leading the team. Other cast members of the film are:

  • Jonathan Bailey as Dr. Henry Loomis
  • Rupert Friend as Martin Krebs
  • Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Reuben Delgado
  • David Iacono as Reuben's son
  • Luna Blaise as Reuben's older daughter
  • Audrina Miranda as Reuben's youngest daughter
  • Bechir Sylvain as Leclerc
  • Philippine Velge, member of Zora's team
  • Ed Skrein, member of Zora's team

Jurassic World: Rebirth will be released on July 2, 2025.
