Ben Affleck will return as Christian Wolff, aka the accountant, in The Accountant 2, but this time, he is accompanied by his brother, Braxton, played by Jon Bernthal. Bernthal appeared in the first film, but he gets more screen time alongside Affleck in the sequel. By the looks of it, the sequel is going to be even better.
It premiered at SXSW this March, and based on early reviews, it's sitting fresh with 84% critic approval on Rotten Tomatoes. The prequel was average in contrast, holding a rating of 53% as of this writing.
Amazon MGM Studio, which is distributing the film in the US, dropped a trailer a month ago on its YouTube channel, and it currently holds 13 million views. The overall number is unknown.
While the trailer is good, featuring some action, some annoying sibling moments, and more, it’s the featured song that attracts and keeps viewers hooked, Find My Way by the industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, part of their eighth studio album, Hesitation Marks.
What is Find My Way about?
The song is part of a bigger picture; that picture here is the album Hesitation Marks. As Esquire magazine notes, it's about a "man's collapse and rebuilding." Interestingly, this man is the singer himself, Trent Reznor, founder and lead vocalist of the band.
All in all, there are 14 tightly knit-together songs, beginning with The Eater of Dreams, indicating the fall. The Accountant 2 trailer song comes after a couple more, Copy of A, which is about a person being pulled apart, and Came Back Haunted, where the title suggests Trent is still holding on to the horrible things he has witnessed.
Finally, we come to Find My Way. As the title suggests, he is, once again, finding meaning in life. A lot more follows, so we are leaving you the Spotify album link so you can find your way there easily. Hear them for yourself.
What is The Accountant 2 about?
The Accountant 2 picks up the story from its prequel, and Ben Affleck is still doing work for high-profile clients (read: criminals). Going by the film's plot (via IMDb):
When her former boss is killed by unknown assassins, Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) is forced to contact Christian Wolff (Affleck) to solve the murder. With the help of his estranged but highly lethal brother Brax (Jon Bernthal), Chris applies his brilliant mind and less-than-legal methods to piece together the unsolved puzzle. As they get closer to the truth, the trio draw the attention of some of the most ruthless killers alive -- all intent on putting a stop to their search.
In contrast to the first film, The Accountant 2 is much lighter in tone, as seen in the trailer. Commercially speaking, it exploded at the box office, going on to garner $155 million on its $44 million budget.
Considering The Accountant 2's early reviews, it is poised to do the same—or better. Gavin O'Connor, the film's director, has plans to give the franchise a trilogy treatment, and just as this one has a lighter tone, the third film will be even lighter than the first two. He told CinemaBlend in an interview:
"The third one is going be a buddy picture."
The Accountant 2 is set for release in the US on April 25, 2025.
