There are no Queensberry rules of being a werewolf now and Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man is new evidence to this. If one needs a resemblance to the kind of werewolves they are about to encounter, we suggest they take a look at Resident Evil Village. They don't simply howl at the moon.

Wolf Man stars Christopher Abbott, Julia Garner, and Matilda Firth in titular roles. Sam Jaeger is there too but fans aren't likely to recognize him like Christopher's character, Black Lovell, until he rips his throat off. It is produced by Jason Blum, who is the CEO of Blumhouse Productions, which has produced franchises like Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and more.

The film is set in the US state of Oregon but was shot in New Zealand's South and North Island for their scenic beauty which serves as a perfect setting for the concept. We will now take a closer look at the regions where it was filmed.

Wolf Man was shot in New Zealand

1) Queenstown

Queenstown is where the forest scenes of Wolf Man were filmed; executive producer Beatriz Sequeira confirmed this in one interview with CBR. It was a challenging task for them to film given the weather in the region. Though we are glad they took the scenic route. She explains that,

"Queenstown, it was beautiful -- cold, but beautiful. Just getting the equipment there was a whole thing. There were a lot of things. We had to move around because of weather, because if it rained a lot, the roads were blocked, so we had to move the schedule around. But I think it's worth it, because it gave the look that we exactly wanted for the movie."

New Zealand is well known for the filming of The Lord of the Rings trilogy and regions like Paradise near Glenorchy were used during the process.

(2) Wellington

The interior sets of Wolf Man were filmed in a studio located in the capital of New Zealand, Wellington. It was used to build the farm, greenhouse, and barn in the film. Beatriz Sequeira praised Ruby Mathers, who was the production designer and helped bring all this to fruition.

Leigh Whannell told Simon Thompson in an interview that this studio was a brand-new setup. It's not usual for him as he is used to renting a theatre while filming something, for which he said,

"They had this amazing theater with a beautiful digital projector, and I wanted to take advantage of it. Usually, when I shoot a movie, I rent out a theater and have a night for the crew to watch a film that inspires what we're doing."

There's a small city called Upper Hut here and the movie's base camp was set up there. Wellington too is rich when it comes to filming history and James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash is one upcoming movie that leverages the region.

(3) Mangaroa - Lovell's farm

Another Wolf Man location was just a few miles from Wellington called Mangaroa. That's the same place The Lord of the Rings creators chose for Rivendell in the film. Lowell's farm was developed in the region.

These were primarily the areas where Wolf Man was filmed, and as Whannell has explained, if someone needs an Oregon-like mountainous setting, this is where they need to be.
