Presence is about a ghost roaming in one house until a family moves into it one day, and chaos follows. An interesting thing about the Steven Soderbergh movie, apart from being shot entirely from a phantom's perspective, is that it was shot within a house in New Jersey's Cranford township.
It will be premiered in the 2024 Sundance Film Festival on January 19, 2024, for which New Jersey's Department of State was happy as multiple films shot in the Garden State are being shown, including A Different Man, I Saw the TV Glow, Exhibiting Forgiveness, and more.
The film will star Lucy Liu (Charlie's Angels), Julia Fox (Uncut Gems), Chris Sullivan (This is Us), and more. Following its Sundance premiere, it will open US-wide on January 24, 2025, with Neon distributing it. As far as ratings are concerned, it sits fresh with an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
What this house in Presence is like?
One of the film's teasers gives us a fair view of this house from the outside. It's located in one posh neighborhood surrounded by greenery. The blue walls are complimented by white hoods. The insides are essentially brownes-que, given the wooden textures, as it is later revealed in the latest trailer, which gives us the first look or experience of the phantom.
Now, almost all the scenes are shot from inside the house in Presence, so there are no details of the region in it. Neither anyone associated with the film has discussed anything specifically about where it was shot. But then, the Cranford township isn't that large, and the United States Census Bureau has marked it as a 4.87 square mile territory.
More scenes may be filmed outside the house, but that'll be revealed once Presence is out. For now, there is another scene where Lucu Liu stands near a window, staring outside as the vehicles pass the road. Most of the trailer then showcases the insides, where the family sits at a dining table, Callina Liang (Chloe) grieving in her bedroom, and more.
New Jersey has been a host to several horror flicks
There's no explanation as to why the location was chosen for filming Presence; there's nothing creepy about the surroundings; in fact, it's wonderful. But New Jersey has hosted filming for many horror movies throughout the years.
Principle filming of 1979's The Amityville Horror happened in Toms River township. It was supposed to be shot in the original house where the original incident occurred, but officials didn't allow the interiors to be filmed. The next project was Friday the 13th. The famous Camp Crystal Lake is actually known as Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco.
A few scenes in Jacob's Ladder, which became a cult classic following its release in 1990, were filmed in New Jersey, too. Another one to the list would be Will Smith's I Am Legend, where the Garden State served as the filming ground for the film's ending.
While Cranford hasn't seen any horror flicks shot in the area, it is featured in psychological thrillers like Eileen and Mothers' Instinct. A few comedy movies, including Guess Who, Garden State, Sweethearts, and more, were filmed in the region too.
