We will soon see Anthony Hopkins' William torturing Bill Skarsgard's Eddie Barrish, who is locked in a car. The Avenue Film, who are distributing it, dropped a tension-filled trailer on January 30, 2025, where Eddie was trying to get out of this automatic car as William chatted with him via an in-built calling system.
Hopkins plays William in the film who owns this car and wants to teach Eddie, who is trying to steal the car, a lesson. The original film's, 4x4, protagonist was dying of cancer but it isn't clear if Anthony Hopkin's character is going through the same. For all we know, he brought his Hannibal Lecter charm into the film.
One thing's certain here, regardless of how frightening a dancing clown or a plague-spreading vampire is, Hannibal Lecter is relentless and will eat their livers with fava beans if he has to. Though Anthony Hopkins brought the persona of his iconic character to the film, it remains to be seen whether we will see him chow down here.
He may not be present physically, as we will be locked with Skarsgard in that car for most of the movie. Though it was shot in a car, there are a few locations in British Columbia, where the vehicle measured the local roads, and it dealt with the indoor scenes too. So we will jump right into it now.
Locked was shot at a couple of locations in British Columbia, Canada
First up is Vancouver, where most of the scenes are captured. As we see in the trailer's beginning, we can see the entire city from above just before the scene cuts to Bill Skarsgard's Eddie going about his daily deeds of stealing cars.
The city has seen a range of action films being shot there, one of them being Liam Neeson's The A-Team. The scene where Bradley Cooper's Face saves his former flame Charissa Sosa (Jessica Biel), was shot at Vancouver Convention Center.
Now that Eddie is finally locked in the car and is introduced to William in the trailer, they are off to a torturous ride in the city. At the 1:38 minute mark of the trailer, we see the self-driving car going through a bridge in the night; that's Burrard Bridge in the film.
Other than Vancouver, we have Winston Studio in Burnaby which served as the second location for the movie. Interior scenes were filmed here. Although we said much of the film takes place in the car, it's only Vancouver that sets up the majority of the film.
How did David Yarovesky pull off filming in a trapped space?
When you are locked, it isn't really simple to do the deeds that need some free space. David Yarovesky, who is in the director's chair, recently discussed a bit about shooting a challenging film like this. He told The Direct in an interview that,
"I wanted the movie to be cinematic. I wanted it to be anamorphic...So we had to have Dan Sasaki at Panavision design custom lenses. He built me the widest lens, widest anamorphic lens I think they had, and he designed me a couple different lenses, some crazy lenses. And then he blunt forced the lenses, which allowed me to focus them almost to the glass on the front of the lens. So I could put Bill's nose millimeters from the lens and focus on him."
While Yarovesky is directing, Sam Raimi, who gave us the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy, is co-producing it alongside Sean Patrick O'Reilly, Zainab Azizi, Ara Keshishian, and Petr Jakl.
Yaroveski has worked with Raimi on the dark fantasy film Nightbooks (2021). The former says they got along well together in one MUSE TV interview. Raimi wanted to work with him and it was the Spider-Man director who sent him the Michael Ross-written script of the film.
Locked will release in theaters on March 21, 2025, in the United States.
