Walt Disney Animation Studios is back with the thrilling sequel Moana 2, as the Disney Princess returns to the big screen to take you on a musical adventure filled with magic. The movie had its early screening at the Lanikuhonua Cultural Institute, Hawaii shortly before its theatrical release on November 27, 2024.
Moana 2 tells us the story of the franchise's titular character Moana as she embarks on a dangerous journey to restore the long-lost island of Motufetu, located in the far stretches of Oceania. She is accompanied by her friend (the demigod) Maui on her adventures and also gets help from a local crew.
Following Disney's recent trend of releasing movies on its OTT interface, Moana 2 is expected to hit digital platforms by March or April 2025 at the latest. It can also reach the OTTs a little early (by January) on other VOD services, if we closely follow the analytics. However, there is yet no confirmation on the same but we can definitely speculate to get some idea.
When will Moana 2 come out on OTT?
Shortly after the theatrical debut of Moana 2, fans started asking questions about the movie's probable streaming dates on Disney Plus and other digital video-on-demand services. The 2016 musical was a box office hit and this time also, Disney is expected to serve the same!
Usually, Disney waits for several weeks to stream its movies on OTT platforms after their theatrical release. For instance, Strange World (2022) took only a month to reach VOD services. But Disney has waited for about 67 days with newer films like Inside Out 2 ( 2024). Since 2022, Disney and Pixar movies have followed this trend.
Based on these analytics, we can expect Moana 2 to hit the OTT platforms in about 60 to 67 days, counting from November 27, 2024 (theatrical premiere), that is January 24, 2025 - the earliest possible date for the musical sequel's online streaming. Moreover, movies like Elemental (2023) and Wish (2023) took almost two months to reach various digital platforms.
But this trend is a bit different when it comes to Disney Plus. Last year, Wish had a 134-day gap between its theatrical premiere and Disney Plus streaming. Strange World took 30 days but Elemental was released 89 days later on Disney's OTT platform.
Going by this logic, we can take the 100-day window to be the best possibility for Moana 2. Thus, March or April 2025 is the latest by which fans can get to witness Moana's magical journey to Oceania. However, it is still under speculation and the date can also vary depending on other projects' timelines.
What is the story of Moana 2?
Moana 2 revolves around the Disney princesses' adventures to the cursed island of Motufetu, located in the far seas of Oceania while trying to restore it. She gathers a local crew and takes her demigod friend Maui along with her.
While on her journey, Moana comes across the villainous God Nalo who had set up the curse in the first place. Moana nearly faces death while trying to save the island but thanks to her ancestors, she is bestowed with the magical powers of the sea.
Moana thus turns into a demigod and gets a new spiritual weapon, her oar. She supposedly becomes immortal like Maui, the demigod, and continues on her adventures.
