Deadline has reported that Vera Farmiga has joined the cast of the upcoming historical drama thriller film Billion Dollar Spy. She will be starring opposite Russell Crowe (playing the role of Adolf Tolkachev) as his wife, Natasha. Harry Lawtey also plays a supporting role in it.

Billion Dollar Spy is directed by Amma Asante, who is a winner of multiple awards as well as the coveted BAFTA awards. Stephen Gaghan, who earlier penned Steven Soderbergh's Traffic and Syriana, is the writer. The Academy Award winner had scripted its initial draft, which was later revised by Ben August. The shooting of Billion Dollar Spy is expected to begin soon.

The producers of Billion Dollar Spy are Cherilyn Hawrysh, Frank Smith, Benjamin Tappan, Greg Lessans, and Akiva Goldsman under their respective banners of Weed Road and Walden Media. Jane Hooks is serving as the executive producer, while the co-producers include Ferenc Szále, David Minkowski, and Ildiko Kemeny for Pioneer Stillking Films. The film will be released internationally by Hanway Films, while the domestic market will be taken care of by CAA Media Finance. The novel was released on July 7, 2015, and met with a positive response.

Farmiga started her career in acting on stage and eventually transitioned into television and films.
