However, together, they fight off the tyrannical Malgosha and restore the world.
The synopsis of A Minecraft Movie, as per IMDb, goes by:
"Four misfits are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they'll have to master this world while embarking on a quest with an unexpected, expert crafter."
However, let us explore the details of Kate McKinnon's character, Alex, in A Minecraft Movie.
What role does Kate McKinnon play in A Minecraft Movie? Here's all about the star's appearance
Kate McKinnon essays the role of Alex in A Minecraft Movie. She comes in an end-credits scene.
In the particular scene, Jack Black's character, Steve, after defeating the vindictive Malgosha in the Overworld, comes back to his home world- the human world.
However, Steve arrives at his house where he used to stay in the human world. But during his stay in the Overworld, his house at his home world has been vend to someone else. It is revealed to be sold to a woman. The woman is none other than, Kate McKinnon's character, Alex.
Alex opens the door of the house, as Steve knocks at it. Both of them introduce each other to them. Interestingly, we do not witness Alex's face in the entire scene at all, but only her back profile. Only the colour of her outfit and her hair is visible. She is seen wearing a green costume, and dons red hair.
Whether or not, Kate McKinnon's character Alex would be developed into a larger character in any future sequel of the film is not established as of now by the team of A Minecraft Movie.
But there could certainly be a more potent reason for the makers to keep her character in the post-credits scene. Given the fact that, the character of Alex is a primary one in the original video game. Usually, directors keep a tease in such stingers for further buildups to keep the anticipation going. This could be one of them as well.
In the Minecraft video game movie, Alex is a lead character, alongside Steve. Initially it was only Steve who was the main player. But with the introduction of Alex, it was a literal 'game changer'.
She is credited for bringing in more inclusivity and heterogeneity to the video game. She is recognised for shattering gender stereotypes as well, as her incorporation has brought in more possibilities for participants to find relatability in the process.
Kate McKinnon has previously worked in films and series including The Big Gay Sketch Show (2007-2010), Staten Island Summer (2015), Sisters (2015), Ghostbusters (2016), Office Christmas Party (2016), The Magic School Bus Rides Again (2017-2022), The Spy Who Dumped Me (2018), The Bubble (2022), Barbie (2023), etc.
A Minecraft Movie is out now in the theatres, after its release on 4th April, 2025.
