Universal Pictures’ highly awaited Wolf Man hit the theatres on the 17th of January 2025. It brings forth a modernized take on the classic Universal Monsters legend.

Wolf Man is directed by Leigh Whannell and with actor Christopher Abbott in the lead role, the film redesigns the werewolf mythos merging instinctual horror with an expressively resonant story that ends up echoing in the minds of the audience watching it.

Blake Lovell: Man Before Monster

Christopher Abbott plays the character of Blake Lovell, an ex-writer who is now a stay-at-home father wrestling with the various issues that come along with marriage and parenting. Residing in San Francisco, Blake struggles to revive his strained relationship with his wife, Charlotte (Julia Garner), The couple also have an eight-year-old daughter who is named Ginger.

The Lovell family's decision to move to Blake’s rural childhood house in the state of Oregon marks the beginning of a nerve-wracking transformation.

After the news of Blake’s father being declared dead, the family shifts from San Fransisco to an inherited farmhouse in the state of Oregon.

However, incidents upon their arrival leave them scarred. As they set foot in Oregon, they’re immediately met with a mysterious entity that attacks them, leaving Blake wounded.

Blake plunges into lycanthropy and his psychological changes put a strain on all of his relationships even further while also testing his humanity.

Christopher Abbott’s portrayal as Blake Lovell in Wolf Man captures the dualism of human and beast, weaving a compassionate story that revolves around his transformation.

Abbott’s portrayal of the effort that Blake puts to maintain his identity by fighting the overriding force of his urges is equally haunting and sad to watch.

Reimagining the Wolf Man

Leigh Whannell's Wolf Man makes sure to highlight and concentrate on the human experience amidst the werewolf folklore. It explores Blake’s transformation and how it affects his family.

The appearance of the Wolf Man in 2025 had quite a different feeling from its predecessors. Unlike the hairy figure played by Lon Chaney Jr. in the year 1941 and the iteration of Benicio del Toro in the year 2010, Christopher Abbott’s Wolf Man is portrayed as less of a monster.

Whannell’s Wolf Man is more about a human-turned-beast whose human features still exist. The movie focuses on the internal struggle faced by Blake due to this sudden transformation rather than his transformed exterior.

Blake’s transformation in Wolf Man unravels in different layers. At first, he experiences heightened senses and then the metamorphosis that gradually takes place with the help of a lot of prosthetic work. Speaking about the transformation, Abbott said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter,

“It looks beautiful, and I’m grateful that we did real prosthetics. The film is all the better for it. But it’s tedious and arduous.......Just wearing the prosthetics for hours is more tiring than you think. Parts of the prosthetics are heavy, and they weigh you down. Physically, you feel like you’re trapped a little bit, so it’s a mental marathon as well.”

With Christopher Abbott’s performance as Blake Lovell along with Leigh Whannell's vision, Wolf Man might just give the werewolf genre in horror a new lens.
