In the new Netflix film Lonely Planet, Susannah Grant takes viewers on a journey to an unnamed part of Morocco. The two characters, Katherine and Lily, are at a turning point in their lives.

Laura Dern stars as Katherine, an experienced writer who has tried in vain to rekindle her creative spark. She is also carrying the weight of her relationship going south and believes this is finally a chance to work on her novel.

Meanwhile, Lily, played by Diana Silvers, is a rising literary star and brings her non-writer boyfriend Owen, played by Liam Hemsworth, to the retreat. When Lily blossoms in the presence of other writers and drinks in their praise, Owen feels excluded and explores the place. He eventually settles down with Katherine.

Katherine on the other hand is a frozen mess. Recently separated from her ex, a cancer survivor and sculptor, Katherine has been kicked out of the apartment they shared.

She is trying to relax and get some work done to meet her publisher's deadlines. But things aren't as smooth as they had thought. Her luggage doesn't arrive, and her ex-boyfriend Ugo (Adriano Giannini) is there in the audience and everything in Katherine’s life just seems to be falling apart.

Grant told Tudum that she wanted to make a film about the transformative nature of travel, about the potential of journeys that take you to new points of view and new self-knowledge.

Lonely Planet is a story that follows two people, Katherine and Owen. Both are stuck in their lives when they meet. At first glance, Katherine's life seems perfect: she is a famous writer, has a husband, and lives in a beautiful farmhouse. But her 14-year marriage is ending, she's homeless, and she's struggling to finish a book she started two years ago.

Katherine tells Owen that she's looking for a way out and wants to be "unstuck." When Katherine begins a romance with Owen, her writer's block disappears overnight, and she soon finds herself sharing secrets with him.

Owen does not seem to realize it, but he too is stuck. He loathes his job because of its ethical and environmental connotations. In his relationship, Owen muddles through, unable to cope with the success of his love.

Eventually the two drift apart from their former partners and find similarities in their newfound ones.
