The Nova Corps, introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), were an intergalactic military unit from the planet Xandar, who served as a peacekeeping group, flying advanced ships to maintain order across the galaxy. However, their story took a dark turn when Thanos attacked Xandar to steal the Power Stone, before events in Avengers: Infinity War.
This devastating event, though not shown in that film, marked the end of the original Nova Corps. The fall left scope for a possible rebirth, aligning them more closely with the way they are described in the comicbooks — as cosmic superheroes powered by the highly advanced artificial intelligence, Xandarian Worldmind.
Recently, Marvel Studios revealed that Ed Bernero, known for his work on Criminal Minds, would be the head writer for Marvel's upcoming Nova series. After years of delay, this announcement has sparked hope among fans who believe Bernero’s storytelling skills could add emotional depth and complexity to the saga.
The Nova Corps
In Guardians of the Galaxy, the Nova Corps had defended Xandar against Ronan the Accuser. They used a powerful net-formation with their ships to help the Guardians defeat Ronan. However, this version of the Nova Corps differed from what is depicted in the comicbooks, where they have superhuman abilities like flight and energy-based powers.
Thanos’ quest to collect the Infinity Stones led him to Xandar for the Power Stone. While Avengers: Infinity War didn’t show the attack, it is implied that Thanos completely destroyed Xandar and the Nova Corps. Fans were left disappointed, wondering how spectacular the epic battle would have looked on screen.
The comicbook version of the Nova Corps is far more powerful. Members gain energy-based powers from the Xandarian Worldmind, which allows them to fly, survive in space, and wield incredible strength. This version of the Corps has the potential to bring exciting new dynamics to the MCU, especially as Marvel explores more cosmic stories.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has hinted at Nova’s future, suggesting a movie or series is on its way. Fans believe the story could feature Richard Rider or Sam Alexander, two Earth-born heroes who carry on the Nova legacy.
Richard Rider, or “Nova Prime,” is a favorite of the comicbook fans. He gains his powers after Xandar’s destruction and becomes a key cosmic hero. Sam Alexander, a younger hero, inherits his father’s Nova helmet and brings a fresh, relatable perspective to the role.
While there is no release date yet, the Nova series is anticipated to be a major addition to Marvel’s cosmic storytelling, potentially arriving after Avengers: Secret Wars in Phase 7 of the MCU. This new series could finally answer lingering questions about the fall of Xandar, while setting up a new generation of cosmic heroes for the future.
