The upcoming true-crime documentary Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare uncovers one of the most terrifying catfishing cases ever. It tells the story of a woman who discovers that she was tricked into a fake relationship for almost ten years. Kirat Assi, a now 43-year-old woman was a victim of catfishing which began in 2009.

The trailer for Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare is out and viewers can see Kirat Assi narrating her mental and physical health struggle after years of online dating. This case was first featured in a Tortoise Media podcast, where she talked about falling in love with Bobby Jandu, a man from a Sikh background, who later revealed he had no clue who Kirat Assi was.

Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare will allow viewers to delve deep into Assi's catfishing and the shocking reality of the scammer. The subject of the Netflix documentary revealed talking with Bobby for almost four years before they confessed to being in love.

Assi was incredibly excited about meeting Bobby in real life and discussing a future with him. However, little did she know that the real Bobby Jandu didn't even know about her existence, and the man she was dating online, was a scammer who stole Bobby's identity.

Kirat Assi is the subject of Netflix's Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare, documenting how her nightmare came true. At 32, Assi had become a career-oriented woman, who was hoping to find someone she could spend her life with. All her friends were getting married, and Kirat Assi thought she would too.

On a random day, Assi received a free request from Bobby Jandu, who had mutual connections with Assi on Facebook. The woman didn't feel suspicious about the account and accepted Bobby's request. Since Bobby Jandu is a Sikh, and was single, Kirat Assi was interested in him.

The two texted for years before Bobby Jandu confessed his feelings to Assi. Their bond grew stronger and Assi asked her boyfriend to meet her in person. Interestingly, Bobby always had an excuse ready and would allege having mental health problems and threatened Assi with suicidal thoughts.

With time, Bobby started showing the dark side of his personality, by controlling Kirat Assi and obsessing over her. This led Assi to suffer severe chest pains and added to her stress. She couldn't focus on her job and wasted most of her time talking to Bobby.

Following her frustration, Kirat Assi hired a detective to explore the truth about Bobby Jandu and discovered that she had been scammed by her cousin Simran Bhogal. During the podcast, Assi stated:

"She has taken ten years of my life from me... I opened up to him - her! - telling him things about my hopes, dreams, my childhood, that I'd never tell anyone. I feel violated."

With the help of the detective, Assi found out the address of the real Bobby and learned that he was a happy married man, who didn't know about his identity being used for a scam. He will also appear in Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare, as the trailer had Bobby saying "I've never spoken to her in my life" followed by Assi questioning what happened to her.

Simran Bhogal deliberately targeted Kirat Assi as she knew about her relationship problems. She cleverly stole Bobby Jandu's pictures and details and created a fake account with his name.

Kirat Assi had a close bond with her cousin, allowing Bhogal to easily manipulate her online. Not only this, but Bhogal even faked the mutuals between Bobby and Assi, to win her trust while accepting the friend request. She continued the catfishing for years, despite knowing how it harmed Assi.

Though the victim didn't share the exact reason why Simran Bhogal trapped her in a web of lies, it's believed she was motivated by personal issues or an obsession with controlling people. To date, this case is considered one of the biggest catfishing cases around the globe.

Sweet Bobby: My Catfish Nightmare arrives on October 16, 2024.
