Andrew Garfield took the stage to present the award for Best Animated Feature Film alongside Goldie Hawn at the Oscars 2025 on March 2, 2025.
But before they moved ahead, The Amazing Spiderman took a moment to express his gratitude to Hawn for the joy she brought his mother, Lynn Garfield. According to a report in the People Magazine, Garfield said:
“Can I tell you something really quickly? There's someone, there's a person who gave my mother, during her life, the most joy, the most comfort.” He added,
“You've given us movies full of joy. You've lifted our spirits and you've made us feel it all was right with the world, over and over again.” In her reply, the teary-eyed actress said, “Thank you so much, that really touches me.”
According to a report in The Sun, Andrew Garfield’s mother, Lynn Garfield, passed in 2019 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
This is not the first time Garfield has reflected on his mother’s passing, but he mentioned her on several occasions since her death. Here is what we know.
What impact did Andrew Garfield’s mother’s death have on his son’s professional and personal life?
Andrew Garfield's mother, Lynn Garfield, had a profound impact on both his personal and professional life. She worked as a teacher at a nursery school and ran a small interior design business alongside her husband, Richard Garfield, according to a report in The Sun.
During his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2021, according to People magazine, Garfield opened up about his mother’s loss.
"I love talking about her, by the way, so if I cry, it's only a beautiful thing," the 42-year-old actor spoke.
"This is all the unexpressed love, the grief that will remain with us until we pass because we never get enough time with each other, no matter if someone lives until 60, 15, or 99," he added.
"So I hope this grief stays with me because it's all the unexpressed love that I didn't get to tell her," the Oscar nominee continued. "And I told her every day. We all told her every day, she was the best of us."
When his mother was in her final days, he was in the middle of filming The Eyes of Tammy Faye, a biopic where he portrayed televangelist Jim Bakker, and Jessica Chastain plays his wife, according to a report in Metro.

In an interview with The Independent, he revealed how his mother encouraged him to begin shooting despite being diagnosed with the illness. However, her condition worsened under hospice care. Garfield mentioned that when he informed his team that he needed to be with his mother, they “shut down the production” for him, which he found “deeply moving.”
“It gave me one of the biggest gifts of my life – I got to be with my mum in the last 10 days of her life. And there’s nothing more vital than that. I would have just gone, ‘I’m going!’ But I was able to go with such love and support from a community of people on this film.” Garfield added.
The Tick, Tick... Boom! actor has not shied away from sharing his feelings for his late mother. His interviews reflected his profound love for his mother. Her encouragement to prioritize his craft even during her illness also influenced his decisions, demonstrating her lasting impact on his career.
