Jack Harlow released his latest single, Tranquility, on December 28, 2024, on his official YouTube page. In the single, the singer seemingly addresses the criticism labeled against him, that of being a culture vulture, aka a white person who is stealing/appropriating things from a different culture.
In Jack Harlow's case, he has been accused of gaining fame through the appropriation of Hip-hop, which was founded and pioneered by black artists and musicians. The singer sings in the single, seeming to address the culture vulture issue:
“People that betrayed me don’t even f*ckin know that I know / It’s something that I just file away / Lost a few m’s on the festival / Okay, and I can’t wait to do the second one...”
Jack Harlow was accused of being a culture vulture recently
Jack Harlow was accused of being a culture vulture very recently after performing covers of Elvis Presley's Can't Help Falling In Love, and Frank Sinatra's Fly Me To The Moon. The singer covered the two songs during a show in Louisville, Kentucky, at the Kentucky Center For The Performing Arts Whitney Hall in November 2022.
His covers set off accusations of becoming popular with rap and then abandoning it for non-rap music. Jack Harlow is one of the latest musicians to be called out as a culture vulture, with previous being Machine Gun Kelly and Bruno Mars, among others.
The singer has previously been accused of objectification for the song Thats What They All Say cover video, which featured a Black woman's legs in backseat of a car beside him in the video.
Jack Harlow has previously talked about his position within the Black community as a white rapper, stating in an exclusive interview with Billboard on December 16, 2021:
"There is a certain reality that I am white, and I think there will always be something attached to that. No matter how embraced I am, there will never be a day that I’m Black. With that being said, there’s a certain responsibility that comes with being a white man in a Black genre, and there’s certain things that have me regarded differently."
The singer continued:
"But there is something exciting about skipping over any barriers that might be there and creating unity. People think of white rappers using hip-hop as a vehicle. It’s important that people know I love hip-hop and want to stay in hip-hop and want to be part of hip-hop and I’m using it as a vehicle to fuel my dreams.”
The singer later addressed about the direction he wanted to take his music in the same interview:
"I think the game needs some urgency, with everything being kind of a vibe right now. It will be a boost of energy for people. You’ll be able to hear in my voice that I’m realizing what I am and what I could be and what I need to work hard to be. My star is rising, and I’m kind of documenting that process and showing you where I want to take it next."
Jack Harlow was critically acclaimed for his debut studio album, Thats What They All Say, which was released on December 11, 2020. The album was followed by his second album, Come Home the Kids Miss You, in 2022 and his third album, Jackman, in 2023.
