The film focuses on several interconnected stories that revolve around the mysterious disappearances of several kids at midnight. All these kids study in the same class and disappear on the same night at the same time. The storyline takes place in a fictional town called Maybrook, and all 17 disappearances take place at 2:17 am.

The teaser video of the film showcases voice-overs of several people as they look into the video of several kids running towards something in the night with their hands in the air. The voiceover says, “Those kids walked out of the homes. No one pulled them out. No one forced them.” The makers have also come up with a website titled 'maybrookmissing.com' for marketing.

In 2024, Josh Brolin spoke to Collider, where he revealed how he became a part of the film. He said that he called his daughter after watching Barbarian.

“So I called my daughter, and I was like, ‘What do you think of this movie Barbarian?’ She was like, 'Oh my god! That’s the greatest…' And she went off.”

He added,

"It’s one of those scripts that’s a new thing. Once in a while, you have a new voice, and new voices are scary. Imagine Scorsese when he was doing Taxi Driver and Mean Streets, and people were like, 'What is this? I love it.' You get a new voice. Zach Cregger is a new voice… [Weapons is] just really smartly designed. Once in a while, you throw the dice, and you hope that somebody is truly a new voice and a great filmmaker. We'll see."

Barbarian, which was Creggar's earlier film, was released in 2022. It was about a woman who went into a rental home, which was also booked by another man. The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing around $45.4 million.
