Nathan Fielder, the Canadian actor and comedian known for his docu-comedy TV series The Rehearsal, has criticized Paramount+ for removing a 2015 episode from his series, Nathan for You, which ran from 2013-2017.
According to Nathan, the episode that Paramount+ removed was the one in which he promoted his clothing line, Summit Ice Apparel, which spread Holocaust awareness. He also expressed frustration over the disparity in the streaming service's search results, pointing out a lack of Jewish representation.
As he explained how the search results on Judaism just gave him zero results as compared to the results given when searched for "N*zi" or "Hitler," he said:
"We've been erased."
Nathan Fielder calls out Paramount+ for removing an episode of his Nathan for You series
Recently, in an episode of The Rehearsals Season 2, Nathan Fielder spoke about how Paramount+ Germany had removed an episode from his 2015 series Nathan for You, due to sensitivities. He said that in that episode, he promoted his clothing brand, Summit Ice Apparel, and the episode also spread Holocaust awareness.
Recalling the moment he realized the episode was removed, he said:
''What I discovered was so shocking, a tornado of emotions began spinning inside my body. The email said, in late 2023, a decision was made by Paramount+ Germany to remove the episode in their region after they became uncomfortable with what they called 'anything that touches on antisemitism in the aftermath of the Israel-Hamas attacks.''
He also said that because Paramount+ Germany removed that episode, other branches of Paramount+ also did the same. He then pointed out the search results on Paramount+ in the US. He said that when he searched for "N*zi," there were 50 results, and then when he searched for "Hitler," there were 10 results, and then when he searched for "Judaism," there were 0 results. He said:
"On the Paramount app, there are 50 results for 'Nazi', 10 for 'Hitler,' and zero for 'Judaism,'" he said, adding, "we've been erased."
Later, Nathan makes the episode dramatic by having an actor play an executive of the German branch of Paramount+. He dresses him up like a N*zi and confronts him in a war room setting. Nathan says to the fake executive of Paramount+:
''Look, I know you guys probably feel a lot of shame about what you did in the past, and now you're trying to overcompensate by being the world leaders in fighting antisemitism, but when it comes to art, I think you have to know your place, and you have to let us Jews express ourselves, because honestly, the way you're approaching this whole thing, people might get the wrong idea about what you actually stand for.''
The fake executive of Paramount+ replies to Nathan, saying:
''You designed this office to look like a war room, dressed me to look like a N*zi, pretending to want feedback, but you don't actually want to get the Paramount+ perspective or the German perspective. Look at you, pretending to be serious! This is not sincere, just a man with his grudge, using his television show to smear us instead of trying to understand us.''
In this episode of The Rehearsal Nathan also highlights on how there is no content on the channel that is centered on Jewish culture or history as compared to the content available on Nazis and Hitler.
