Jack Schumacher recently spoke about his working experience with Tom Cruise on Top Gun: Maverick. The adrenaline-fueled sequel felt like a long-due project for the star's fans. It offered all they could have asked for in a follow-up to his 1986 film and made them nostalgic for the time since they saw Cruise as the iconic pilot. While now known as the actor behind a string of box office successes, Cruise was not a star when the film went into production. It was one of his earliest projects, which turned him into an overnight sensation, and deservedly so.
Consider working alongside Tom Cruise over three decades later in your debut project. Well, that's what happened to Jack Schumacher, who made his feature film debut as Lt. Neil 'Omaha' Vikander in and with Maverick. During a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment, he opened up about the challenges of working with one of the biggest acting stars and what he learned during the shoot.
"It was the first movie I ever did. The amount that I learned was astounding. What better place to learn from — you’rewatching Tom Cruise, Jon Hamm, and Miles Teller! I can name everyone on that cast and something I learned from all of them. It was interesting too, because during the whole experience, I had impostor syndrome."
Jack Schumacher reveals details about Tom Cruise, his leadership skills, and his enthusiasm
Jack Schumacher reveals how Tom Cruise cheered him and everyone else on set by reminding them that they're "making a movie!" Schumacher mentions how important it is on film sets when things often get stressful, and if the captain of the ship is not in full control of their emotions, it affects everyone else on the set.
"Especially on a set, if you have the lead of a show, or if you have a director who's just down and angry and yelling at people, there's a trickle-down effect. It's toxic to a set, and that can really make for a terrible day. Everyone's stressed out."
In such situations, Tom Cruise would take it upon himself to get everyone pumped up for their huge undertaking. Schumacher tells Screerant,
"What Tom would do is he would roll up, he would get out, and he's like, "We're making a movie!" You could see this dude is more stoked than anyone, and that gets everyone else pumped up...To have a guy who's the captain of the ship, who is maintaining his cool, knows everyone's name, is clearly more excited to be there than anyone. That, I think, is one of the keys to that."
In another interview, Jack Schumacher opened up further about Tom Cruise's leadership on the Top Gun: Maverick:
"Watching the way Tom conducts himself as a leader, he wears every hat. He’s so specific about what he wants and what he needs in performances and shots. He knows how to be the leader on set — to show up ready to go, remain enthusiastic, and learn people’s names so he can be connected to everyone."
Schumacher currently stars in Ransom Canyon, a romantic western drama for Netflix, which is drawing comparisons with Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone series.
