The film adaptation of Wicked, which has been directed by Jon M. Chu, has carried the much-loved Broadway musical to the theatres. With the film being released in 2024, the film rapidly turned into a massive success, with it receiving critical acclaim and praises from its viewers.
One exciting addition on to the cast is the Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage, who offers his voice to the character of Doctor Dillamond, who is a necessary character in the story.
Peter Dinklage, who is known for his Emmy-winning role as Tyrion Lannister, also highlights his vocal flairs as the informed yet doomed professor at the University of Shiz.
His depiction of Dillamond, brings profundity and emotion to the film’s themes based on discrimination and social injustice which makes Dillamond’s participation more impactful.
Peter Dinklage as Doctor Dillamond in Wicked
Peter Dinklage adopts the role of the character of Doctor Dillamond, a talking goat who aids as the head of the department of history at the University of Shiz where Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda (Ariana Grande) are enrolled as students.
In contrast to other professors who are humans, Dillamond is a traditional human educator, Dillamond is an academic farm animal, which aligns with the fictional world of Oz.
Dinklage recorded his lines discretely from the rest of the cast, a procedure which he labelled as both tough and satisfying. In an interview with Cinema Express he shared –
“It was a bit of a lonely process, recording in a sound booth apart from the rest of the cast, but it’s such an honour to be part of something this universally loved and amazingly creative…. Wicked resonates because everyone feels like an outsider at some point. It’s about defining your independence and strength within that feeling of isolation. Above all, it teaches kindness, which is the most important thing.”
Doctor Dillamond plays an important role in developing Elphaba as a character. As a prey of the Wizard’s progressively cruel policies against talking animals, he exemplifies the injustice that fuels the changes seen in Elphaba.
His exit from the university, because of discrimination, intensely disturbs her and solidifies her defiance against the wizard of Oz.
Dinklage also sings "Something Bad," a song that foretells the fate of the talking animals in Oz. In this song, Dillamond alerts Elphaba about all of the puzzling disappearances and growing restraints, where he hints at something big and sinister in regards to the Wizard.
His warnings drive Elphaba to take concrete action, which ultimately sets her up to become the Wicked Witch of the West.
What’s next? Peter Dinklage’s return in Wicked
After a whole lot of success gained by Wicked part 1, Universal Studios is gearing up to release the sequel during the latter half of 2025.
The two-part Broadway story will allow for a more in-detail exploration of the story, and Peter Dinklage is now a confirmed cast member who is set to get back to his character of Doctor Dillamond.
Major details about the sequel remain covered up for now. However, fans of the Broadway and the first installment can presume that Dillamond’s story be continued as he takes active part in Elphaba’s plans to rebel against the wizard of Oz.
Peter Dinklage being involved in Wicked as Doctor Dillamond adds to being a dominant element towards the film. Dinklage brings wisdom and gravity to his character and he represents the themes of injustice and prejudice within the film which also makes him important to Elphaba’s journey.
As eagerness builds on for the sequel, fans can be sure to seeing more of Dinklage later this year!
