Amazon MGM Studios has confirmed Henry Cavill leading the live-action Voltron movie. According to The Hollywood Reporter, this bit has shaken up Hollywood as the news marks another large-fantasy role for Cavill, having assumed the shoes of Superman and Geralt in The Witcher.

Cavill will be joined by new face Daniel Quinn-Toye, a West End star, who made a notable impression opposite Tom Holland in Romeo & Juliet. To be shot this fall in Australia, the movie is based on the popular 1980s anime, Voltron: Defender of the Universe, a reworked version of the Japanese shows Beast King GoLion and Kikou Kantai Dairugger XV.

This new cut promises to bring the mecha action to a new audience, marrying cutting-edge technology with star power.

Who will Henry Cavill play in Voltron?

Known for his physicality and commanding presence on screen, Cavill is far from being new to playing heroic characters.

The Hollywood Reporter argues that his latest stint in Argyle and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare indicates that he can bring out dramatic and action roles. Thurber intends to anchor the movie with a recognized star; in this case, Cavill, to make it more bankable.

Joining him is Daniel Quinn-Toye, a relative newcomer to Hollywood with some serious stage experience. Quinn-Toye caught the attention of the Voltron team after standing out in his performance as Paris in the West End production of Romeo & Juliet.

Although Quinn-Toye has no film credits, his choice shows that the team wants to balance old familiar faces with new talent. For Quinn-Toye, it is something that he needs to prove himself with, as a newcomer in this kind of film, while his integration into the cast will illustrate the chemistry between him and Cavill.

The long-awaited arrival of Voltron on the big screen

First aired in the mid 1980's, Voltron remains an enduring fan favorite. The new marriage between the mecha action and teamwork of five varied pilots commanding lion-shaped vehicles united to form the mighty robot, grabbed the viewers' attention.

What was created as the concept for the show, an adaptation of two different Japanese series, became an instant international success when World Events Productions created it for Westerners.

This is a long time coming: Amazon has owned the rights to bring Voltron into live action for years. Earlier attempts date back to 2005! The studio competed for the project with Warner Bros and Universal for a prize at the end of the bidding process, which ended early this year 2022.

According to IGN, the title for this battle over rights is coming a long way because the franchise promises to be an unstoppable blockbuster film franchise. The director for the project is Thurber, a man credited with placing Red Notice, a super-productive Netflix title under his belt.

Various fans have been hanging out in the cyber vineyards speculating on what the adaptation might look like. With Cavill and Quinn-Toye leading, it's only a given that Voltron will do justice to its formative years while pushing forward with more fluid cinematic opportunities toward delivering over-the-top mecha battles.

Speculation is rife now that production is gearing up with guesses over who will complete the rest of the cast, particularly on the female lead, with a reported thorough search undertaken with screen tests, as of September 2024.

The much-talked-about live-action adaptation from Amazon MGM is heading straight to Amazon Prime Video.
