Void vs. Sentry - Key differences explained as MCU confirms the Thunderbolts* in Avengers: Doomsday

It's time the Thunderbolts* stepped in; Captain America and Red Hulk were easy to forget after Brave New World was released. Rest assured, Cap is coming back, and so are the Thunderbolts, which were confirmed in an Avengers: Doomsday livestream that kept fans in front of their screens for over five hours.

The new team that Valentina Allegra is assembling in Thunderbolts appears cooler than the Avengers; of course, we have Bucky in there. But there's also Bob, aka Sentry (and the Void), whom Lewis Pullman is playing. He is one twisted character with the power of a million exploding suns. He is basically our Superman—well, better.

Bob, whose real name is Robert Reynolds, is both the Void and the Sentry. No, he isn't playing two different roles. These characters emerge out of Robert Reynolds himself, but both are different when they appear. So let's understand both of them—or let's just say, Bob.

Know how Void is different from Sentry before Thunderbolts* finally hit theaters

5. Void is stronger of the two

The original story makes Sentry appear stronger, but that's obvious; we cannot let evil persist and rule—the hero should win. But Void has taken over Bob multiple times, and he sometimes even needed help from Doctor Strange to overcome the evil entity.

Void appears when Sentry is active, and when Sentry became famous for his good deeds, Void took over and did the exact opposite, taking the lives of over a million people.

Here, Strange, alongside Reed Richards, helped Sentry sacrifice his identity, and now no one remembers him. Given that he is not active now, Void has also vanished. That's much like what we saw at Spider-Man: No Way Home's end. That scene was probably taken from here as inspiration.

4. Sentry is no clairvoyant

We already said that Sentry is our version of Superman. Interestingly, in the Thunderbolts* trailer, he did pose like DC's superhero when Void took over. And this superhuman certainly has supernatural abilities.

Sentry has some seriously heightened senses, but wait—Void is one step ahead. It has the same ability, but it can sense more than just the tangible aspects of the world. It can sense the feelings inside a human. Sentry can't really do that. If a human is scared, Sentry wouldn't know without looking at a person's face—Void can do that with its eyes closed (if it even has eyes).

3. Void can control other entities

Bob's story is mostly about Sentry's struggle with Void. The latter keeps controlling him every now and then, which is likely what happens in Thunderbolts. But Bob isn't the only victim here—Void has taken over other entities, too.

Doctor Strange, who helped Bob sacrifice his identity, as mentioned, was possessed by it in Doctor Strange issue #384, where Loki had become the Sorcerer Supreme. Yelena Belova experienced something similar when she somehow absorbed Sentry's powers. With power comes a great deal of Void.

2. Sentry has fought alongside Doctor Doom

Fans might be interested to know that Sentry has worked alongside Victor Von Doom, too—though reluctantly. In Mighty Avengers #9 and #10, he was stuck with Iron Man and Doctor Doom (both played by Robert Downey Jr. in the MCU, btw), and they had to work together.

Sadly, Void never did that. Instead, it made Doom cower in front of it. During one of the Dark Avengers issues, Doom disagreed with what the others had agreed upon. So Void was summoned by Norman Osborne, who was working with it, to threaten him. Well, that worked, as Void blasted the Fantastic Four's archenemy.

1. Void is not a person but a force

The biggest and most vital aspect to know about them is that Void is not a person, and you might have noticed that I addressed Void as 'it' throughout the list. It is a malevolent force that bonded with Bob when he consumed the serum he tried in hopes of getting high. Void is in his head, although it can manifest itself in human form or other shapes.

On the contrary, Sentry is very much a person. Like he stutteringly said in the Thunderbolts trailer, "I am Bob." In fact, Sentry is to Bob what Superman is to Clark Kent.
