Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) has returned after a quarter century in Top Gun: Maverick, and once a lieutenant, he is now a captain. It continues the story where, at present, he isn't with his buddy Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), who was killed in the first film.

Like the first film in the series, the film exploded at the box office and did business of over $1.5 billion globally. Critically speaking, the film met with rave reviews and currently sits with a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

But it's not just that; the film featured some remarkable songs alongside the instrumentals to give us a sense of heightened emotions. So, we will see the major songs that Top Gun: Maverick uses. Though some of them were a part of the main soundtrack, others weren't included but were used in certain scenes.

A list of songs used in Top Gun: Maverick

Hold My Hand by Lady Gaga

Fans will hear this song being played in bits and pieces throughout the film. There is a bar scene where Penny (Jennifer Connelly) and her daughter, Amelia (Lyliana Wray), are having a chat in a bar. But the song comes in full swing at the very end of the film when Cruise and Connelly's characters unify.

Lady Gaga co-wrote as well as sang the song, which later would be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song, the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, and more.

I Ain't Worried by OneRepublic

Vice Admiral Beau "Cyclone" Simpson (Jon Hamm) wanted a team; Maverick gave him a team. This is one of the best scenes in the film, where the entire crew is playing football by the beach. You cannot simply tell here if anyone's a rival. And it fits well with the theme in this Top Gun: Maverick scene, as literally no one looked worried in the scene.

There's an interesting story behind the song where the One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder had to do some edits himself to fit it within the scene. It was sort of rebellious, but Tom Cruise loved the results, as do we. Great job there, Tedder.

Great Balls of Fire by Miles Teller

This was a perfect recreation of the original song that Goose plays during lunch in the original film. We can see little Bradley Bradshaw, who will later come to be known as Rooster (Miles Teller), playing the piano. Now, Rooster gives one live performance in Top Gun: Maverick, like his father did.

It was originally recorded by Jerry Lee Lewis and sold a million copies in just 10 days. Also, it peaked at the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles and UK Singles Chart too.

Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins

No matter which of the two movies in the series you are watching, Top Gun isn't Top Gun without Danger Zone. It plays at the opening sequence of the 2022 film, and that's all.

The film was supposed to use a new version of the song, but then Tom Cruise insisted that they keep the Kenny Loggins song in the movie.

Other songs featured in Top Gun: Maverick

While these are the four major songs you'll hear in the film, here are some songs not included in the soundtrack.

  • Your Cheatin' Heart by Hank Williams
  • Let's Dance by David Bowie
  • Get It On by T. Rex
  • Tramp by Otis Redding and Carla Thomas
  • Slow Ride by Foghat
  • Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who
