Leonardo DiCaprio gives the best performance of his career as Jim Carroll, a talented basketball star from high school who sinks into the morass of drugs. Directed by Scott Kalvert from Carroll's autobiographical novel, this is a gritty realist portrayal of ambition gone dark and adolescent struggle, both with flashes of poetic lyricism and harrowing descriptions of lost potential. DiCaprio's emotional depth and intensity bring authenticity to Jim's descent and redemption, and this is why The Basketball Diaries is a haunting yet impactful story about overcoming personal demons.
