Thunderbolts*, the second MCU movie in 2025, brings an Avengers-style team of heroes, but with villains from the previous movies. Thunderbolts* consists of Yelena Belova, the new Black Widow, John Walker (US Agent), Red Guardian, Ghost (from Ant-Man & The Wasp), Bucky, and Taskmaster. It's likely that these villains from an MCU film or television series come together for a covert operation.
The movie is directed by Jake Schreier, who has directed movies such as Paper Towns and Robot & Frank. It is filled with a talented cast consisting of Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, and many more. There is an extensive cast of performers and characters in Thunderbolts*. This Thunderbolts* cast and character guide will help you if you're puzzled.
Thunderbolts* cast and character guide
Thunderbolts* assembles villains (who have supposedly changed) and come together as antiheroes for a mission. Eric Pearson, Joanna Calo, and Lee Sung Jin have served as writers for Thunderbolts*. Thunderbolts* boasts of a stacked cast and will hit the theaters on May 2, 2025. Here are the characters that are part of the team along with the actors who will play them:
Yelena Belova/Black Widow (played by Florence Pugh)
The first time viewers were introduced to Yelena was in the solo Black Widow movie that was released in 2021. In that movie, Natasha reunited with her surrogate spy family, which included her "sister," Yelena Belova; "father," Alexei/Red Guardian; and "mother," Melina Vostokoff. While both sisters were trained to be Black Widow assassins, Romanoff defected to SHIELD.
Yelena, conversely, continued following General Dreykov's commands until she and other Black Widows were freed from the General's control. We last saw Yelena in Hawkeye, who, under the orders of Valentina Allegra De Fontaine, was trying to kill Clint Barton. However, she decides to let him live after learning about Black Widow's sacrifice in Endgame.
We see her working as an assassin in the Thunderbolts* trailers that have been released as of now.
Bucky Barnes (portrayed by Sebastian Stan)
By the time Thunderbolts* is released in May 2025, Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes will have been a veteran in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for 14 years. From his first appearance in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger to his last appearance in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Bucky has gone from being a war hero and a brainwashed assassin to a veteran struggling with guilt.
Thunderbolts* also thrusts Bucky into a more responsible role as he is also a congressman during the events of the movie. His role in Thunderbolts* will undoubtedly add another layer to his complex story arc.
John Walker/US Agent (played by Wyatt Russell)
John Walker was declared as the new Captain America in the first episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier after Steve Rogers' "disappearance" in Endgame. However, John was fired by the government when he executed a Flag Smasher in public with the Captain America Shield. He was hired again by Valentina, who gave him the new moniker of the "US Agent," a role he currently seems to be in.
Moreover, in a Thunderbolts* trailer we can see him with a child. He is still working as the US agent, and the uniform given to him at the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier looks like it has seen a lot of secret missions.
Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (portrayed by David Harbour)
David Harbour's Alexie was introduced as the Russian supersoldier Red Guardian in the 2021 Black Widow movie. Despite having served in the Soviet military for years, his ally, General Dreykov, imprisoned him. Due to this reason, he assisted his "daughters" in destroying the Red Room. In the Thunderbolt* teaser, his life looks like a mess, but no further details are provided.
Ava Starr/Ghost (played by Hannah John-Kamen)
Ava Starr gains her power right in the same accident as the one in which her parents died. Because of her phasing powers, she became a SHIELD agent for years. But her powers have a catch, though; she needs to access the quantum energy to live. But, during the events of Ant-Man and the Wasp, she was close to dying. However, Janet, Hope/Wasp's mother, heals Ghost a bit.
Among the things that stand out about Ghost in Thunderbolts* is her new appearance and mask. Additionally, it appears that she can now manage her abilities.
Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster (portrayed by Olga Kurylenko)
Antonia is General Dreykov's daughter, who was controlled by him through a chip in her body. The same chip also gifted her the ability to flawlessly mimic the fighting techniques of Captain America and Hawkeye. She was freed at the end of Black Widow, but her role in Thunderbolts* remains unclear.
Bob Reynolds/Sentry (played by Lewis Pullman)
"Bob" Reynolds, or the Sentry, is the only new character introduced in the Thunderbolts* trailer. For those unfamiliar with the Sentry, he is a powerful superhero whose abilities may rival those of Superman's. However, if the movie is following the Marvel lore, the Sentry also has a dark secret, something the trailer hints at.
Val/Contessa Valentina Allegra De Fontaine (portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus)
Despite debuting in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and appearing in three MCU projects, we don't know much about her role, except for the idea that she is the one behind the Thunderbolts*. So far, she appears to be to the Thunderbolts* what Amanda Waller is to Task Force X and Creature Commandos in the DC Universe.
What is Thunderbolts* about?
Releasing in the Summer of 2025, Thunderbolts* features a ragtag group of characters that played antagonistic or supporting roles in other MCU entries. Even its official synopsis is cheeky.
This is what it reads:
"Marvel Studios and a crew of indie veterans who sold out present Thunderbolts*, an irreverent team-up featuring depressed assassin Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) alongside the MCU’s least anticipated band of misfits."
The Thunderbolts* trailers have been received well as of now, and the talent behind the camera only has people excited. You can catch the movie in the cinema hall near you on May 2nd, 2025.
