The Woman In The Yard: Why is Ramona spelled backward at the end?

The Woman in the Yard has a few characters in it: Ramona (Danielle Deadwyler), her children, and, of course, a woman in their yard. The film plays on a horror-as-a-metaphor theme but forgets about character development. If we can take something from it, it is that depression is a battle with the self, and in this case, it actually manifested.

The creators left the audience with an ambiguous ending in the film, and now, they can develop their own theories, which clearly have a vast scope. But it seems like Ramona likely died at the end. It would've been clearer if we saw some gunshot or so there, but no. Her life with her children has suddenly become happy. Again, there's no how.

Then came the scene where we see her name in her signature. The only issue here is that it's written, or signed, backward, suggesting that she is in some other world now. A mirror world, an afterlife, but definitely not the real world.

But there's a discussion among the fans that it was just the letter R that was in reverse; the rest of the name was written correctly, implying that she finally has acceptance. For us, it was the entire name 'Ramona' that was mirrored. but we will discuss both here.

Disclaimer: Mild spoilers of The Woman in the Yard will follow.

We will begin with the obvious The Woman in the Yard ending, which clearly implies that she has killed herself and whatever's happening is now happening in her conscious, it's not real. That's something like this (head to the bonus part).

We won't talk about The Woman (Okwui Okpokwasili) much to save you the little fun that's in the movie, but know that throughout the film, she just comes closer and closer to the house until it comes so close to Ramona that they merge. To be precise, The Woman pulls her into some sort of mirror dimension.

There, we see her looking at an unfinished painting with, read that loud and clear, Ramona written backwards. That said, she isn't in the real world and either died or was pulled into some other dimension. Either way, she's not on Earth.

You know, alphabets can give a hard time to the kids. It's the letter 'R' for Ramona's daughter Annie (Estella Kahiha), who writes it in reverse. For that, fans will see her scolding the little kid. But this is what links to this ending that some fans are talking about.

According to this version, it's the letter 'R' that's reversed in the painting, and the rest of the name is correctly written. It implies that Ramona has finally found acceptance. And that, she's still on Earth.

The reversed 'R' her child used to make annoyed her, owing to the depression she is going through. But then she herself signed that painting with it, indicating that it doesn't annoy her anymore. If that's the case, Annie must be happy, for she can make innumerable reversed Rs now.

It might be that these fans haven't actually seen the film, as there's no announcement or anything that The Woman in the Yard comes with two endings.
