The Shadow Strays began streaming on Netflix on October 17, 2024. Being a Netflix original, the movie is exclusively available to watch on the streamer. Before its streaming debut, the film was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024.
The story of The Shadow Strays
The movie chronicles the journey of a 17-year-old skilled assassin with the codename 13. She works for a dangerous organization and is sent on an assassination mission in Japan. However, things do not go as planned.
Though she seeks help from a veteran assassin and her mentor, Umbra, she is ultimately removed from the organization and is forced to live in exile in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. In the city, she comes across an 11-year-old boy named Monji and forms a close bond with him.
However, one day, Monji is kidnapped by people belonging to a criminal group. 13 then goes to great lengths to safeguard her friend, and embarks on a violent spree against his kidnappers. The official synopsis of the film reads:
“Skilled in the art of killing, a young assassin defies her mentor to save a boy from a ruthless crime syndicate — and she'll destroy anyone in her path.”
The cast of The Shadow Strays
The movie stars 20-year-old actress Aurora Ribero as 13. She is known for her performance in the 2022 film Like & Share. Ribero has turned in quite a performance in The Shadow Strays as a girl who is tough on the outside but has an empathetic heart.
She is joined by Ben & Jody star Hana Malasan as Umbra and 24 Hours with Gaspar actor Ali Fikry as Monji. The full cast of the film is as below:

The movie is written and directed by Timo Tjahjanto, who is known for making high-octane action and horror films. His previous works include movies like The ABCs of Death, May the Devil Take You, The Night Comes for Us, and The Big 4.
Tjahjanto will soon be making his Hollywood debut by helming the Bob Odenkirk starrer action-thriller, Nobody 2. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker revealed why he prefers to make dark and violent films like The Shadow Strays:
“I think there is room for violent action cinema. Not every action movie has to be a superhero movie. I don’t have any problem with superhero movies. But action films, in the end, are made for grown-up people. And I want grown-ups to watch this and be able to say, ‘Yeah, that’s what happens if you put a sword into a person’s neck.’”
