The upcoming black comedy The Roses, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, is slated to be released on 29th August 2025.

Distributed by Searchlight Pictures, The Roses is helmed by director Jay Roach. He has previously directed films and series, including Zoo Radio (1990), the Austin Powers film franchise (1997-2002), Meet the Parents (2000), Recount (2008), Trumbo (2015), etc.

It follows the plot of a couple who is at loggerheads due to their deeply dysfunctional relationship and career-related insecurities.

The plotline of the film, as per Searchlight Pictures, goes by:

"Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy (Olivia Colman) and Theo (Benedict Cumberbatch): successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo’s career nosedives while Ivy’s own ambitionsatake off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites."

The upcoming black comedy The Roses gets a release slot

The Roses shall make its release on 29th August 2025.

It is derived from the 1989 film The War of the Roses, starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, Danny DeVito, and many others.

Originally, this film is an adaptation of a novel written by Warren Adler named 'The War of the Roses.' It was published in 1981. However, this film is penned by Tony McNamara, who has previously written Ashby (2015), Cruella (2021), Poor Things (2023), etc.

It will be produced by Michelle Graham, Leah Clarke, Adam Ackland, Tom Carver, and Ed Sinclair, along with the director himself, Jay Roach. The production companies involved in the film include South of the River Pictures and SunnyMarch.

Actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman will also join hands in producing the film. Along with Clarke and Ackland, Cumberbatch shall be joining SunnyMarch. Olivia Colman shall be joining Tom Carver and Ed Sinclair and producing under the banner of South of the River Pictures.

As per Variety, Sinclair and Colman jointly expressed their thoughts about the film by saying:

“We have been cooking this up with our friends at SunnyMarch for some time, and it has been an absolute thrill to see it spring into life under Jay’s passionate and thoughtful guidance. He and Tony are a match made in cinematic comedy heaven.”

The executive production company associated with the film is Adler Entertainment Trust, with executive producers Michael Adler and Jonathan R. Adler.

Matthew Greenfield, president of Searchlight Productions, shared his thoughts about its story while speaking to Variety last year, as he spoke:

“‘The Roses’ is a wildly funny, bigger than life, and yet deeply human story,”

Benedict Cumberbatch is well known for his works in films and series, including the Sherlock Holmes series (2010-2017), Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), The Imitation Game (2014), The Hobbit film franchise (2012-2014), Doctor Strange (2016), The Power of the Dog (2021), and many others.
