Based on true events, The Ritual follows two priests -- one questioning his faith (Dan Stevens) and one reckoning with a troubled past (Al Pacino) -- who must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms. The trailer of The Ritual opens up with the voiceover of Al Pacino's words, as he utters- "We are the Lord's army in this battle", topped with a melancholic musical score.

As the veteran actor's spoken text continues, we see visuals of preparations for an exorcism take place. He ends his statement by saying, "We must be resolute and hold back the darkness".

As the trailer progresses, we realise that this particular case of possession is not a simple one to tame. It gives away the sense that the dark energy that has engulfed Emma is far more potent than the power of the exorcists. The also displays blood and gore.

In one spine-chilling scene, we witness the possessed Emma Schmidt's neck breaking, making a crackling sound.

In the film, Al Pacino essays the role of Father Theophilus Riesinger, a famous real-life figure who, in 1928, had performed an exorcism on Emma Schmidt. Dan Stevens is portraying the role of another real-life person, Father Joseph Steiger. He had joined hands with Father Theophilus Riesinger in this exorcism.

Along with them, actor Abigail Cowen is portraying the role of Emma Schmidt. The rest of the cast of The Ritual includes:

  • Ashley Greene as Sister Rose
  • Ritchie Montgomery as Chester
  • Patricia Heaton as Mother Superior
  • Emily Brinks as Betty
  • Maria Camila Giraldo as Sister Camila
  • Calvin Williams as a Church Member
  • Enrico Natale as Dr. Fabian
  • Courtney Rae Allen as Sister Mary Joseph
  • Liann Pattison as Sister Antonella
