The world of magic in the Harry Potter series is filled with numerous dark things that have immense impact. Among these, the three unforgivable curses truly are a vile piece of dark magic from which the wizards have suffered. The unimaginable pain that the Cruciatus curse inflicts on the victims is unimaginable.

It pushes the victims to the brink of insanity from where there is no return. These curses serve as a reminder of the brutal realities that pose a threat to everyone in this magical world. The new Defense against the Dark Arts teacher, Alastor Moody, was introduced in the Goblet Of Fire. During his first class, he told the students about the three unforgivable curses. While talking about the Cruciatus Curse, he brought out a spider to demonstrate its effects.

He applied the curse on the spider, and the students were forced to witness the immense pain and torture this curse inflicted on the victim. The spider’s tiny body arched and contorted in pain. It could be understood that the spider suffered immense pain because of the curse. Neville was heavily impacted by seeing the spider tortured. This was a crucial moment as it highlighted for the first time the pain Neville’s parents suffered from when they were under this spell. Though the spider is not a character, this demonstration was significant.

Using the Cruciatus Curse is a significant turning point in a character’s journey. It is a symbol of cruelty that leaves the victims deeply affected. So, let’s talk about the seven characters who have suffered from this immense torture.

1) Harry Potter

In Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, Harry and Cedric took the cup and arrived at the Little Hangleton graveyard. Barty Crouch Jr had turned the cup into a portkey. Initially, they were not able to understand the danger they were in. Cedric was surprised to know that the cup was a portkey. However, all of a sudden, Peter Pettigrew arrives at the place with a very vulnerable Voldemort in his arms. Harry understands the grave danger they are in, but it is too late.

Peter Pettigrew killed Cedric, but Harry couldn't do anything to save him. On seeing Harry, Peter Pettigrew captured him and started the ritual to bring back Voldemort stronger. The ingredients required were the bone of the father, the flesh of a servant, and the blood of an enemy.

After successfully regenerating, Voldemort asks Harry to fight with him in a dual. During this fight, he attacks Harry with the Cruciatus Curse. Harry starts to writhe in pain and struggles with it. It is undoubtedly one of the most intense moments of the movie.

2) Cedric Diggory

Cedric Diggory had it tough in Goblet of Fire. During the last competition of the Triwizard championship, Cedric, Harry, Krum, and Fleur took their position before it started. The maze of the last competition was one of the most challenging ones in the tournament.

Initially, everything seemed fine. However, Harry quickly finds out that Fleur has been attacked and that she has been removed from the competition. During the competition, Krum was bewitched with the Imperius curse by Barty Crouch Jr., and he used the Cruciatus curse on Cedric Diggory.

In the book, the depiction of the torture that Cedric felt has been given in a detailed manner. The excruciating pain that Cedric felt could be understood through the pages. Cedric’s fate in the movie was truly a disheartening one.

3) Neville Longbottom

Though in the movie, Bellatrix using the Cruciatus spell on Neville was not shown, in the book, Neville suffers from the Cruciatus curse for some time. Neville has a long history with the curse. Understandably, the curse has an immense effect on him.

He was also impacted immensely when Professor Moody used the Cruciatus curse to teach them about the three Unforgivable curses in the movie Goblet of Fire. Neville’s reaction is far more intense than his peers' when he sees the spider writhe in pain. Neville was visibly shaken. His response was not just because of the cruelty of the curse. It was also related to the fact that his own parents suffered due to the same curse. The Cruciatus curse, when inflicted upon for a prolonged period, often leads to mental damage.

This mental damage is irreversible. In Neville’s case, he grew up knowing his parents were affected by the curse, so he had to live with his grandmother. In the movie Goblet of Fire, Neville witnessed the effects of the curse firsthand. It triggered the memory of his parents suffering from it because of Bellatrix Lestrange.

4) Bellatrix Lestrange

In Harry Potter and The Order Of the Phoenix, Harry came face to face with Voldemort once again. It was an intense moment. However, just before this encounter, he had to go through one of the toughest moments. Bellatrix Lestrange killed his Godfather, Sirius Black, right in front of his eyes. He witnessed his death and was not able to do anything.

After killing Sirius, Bellatrix tried to escape. While she was escaping, she kept saying that she had killed Sirius Black. Harry was consumed by raw, blinding rage and anger. He chased after Bellatrix and used the Cruciatus curse on her. Bellatrix struggled and writhed in pain.

However, the curse was less effective on Bellatrix than Voldemort had applied to him in Goblet of Fire. This was a significant moment in Harry’s journey. It showed his willingness to cross lines in moments of extreme anger and pain. Losing his parents and then losing the only family member he had left right in front of his eyes took a toll on him.

5) Frank Longbottom and Alice Longbottom

There are several mentions in the movie about Neville’s parents, Alice and Frank Longbottom, suffering from the Cruciatus curse. The two brave wizards and respected aurors fought against Voldemort. They were also members of the Order Of the Phoenix. Their courage and defiance made them targets for the attack. Eventually, they were attacked by Bellatrix Lestrange.

Bellatrix Lestrange put them through immense torture using the Cruciatus Curse on them for a prolonged period. As we know, prolonged exposure to this dangerous curse leads to permanent mental damage, which the Longbottoms suffered. Their minds could not endure the intense pain and agony. Though they were alive, they could not live normal lives anymore. They had to spend the rest of their lives in the long-term care of the magical hospital of St. Mungo’s.

6) Peter Pettigrew

Yet another character that suffered the impact of the Cruciatus curse. Voldemort inflicts the Cruciatus curse on Peter Pettigrew. In Goblet of Fire, Harry sees a vision. In the vision, he witnesses Peter Pettigrew suffering from the Cruciatus Curse. He was neglecting his duties, which caused him to get punished.

Peter Pettigrew played a vital role in bringing Harry to Voldemort. He helped in fulfilling the ritual. The impact of the Cruciatus curse offers a glimpse of the terrifying reality of serving Voldemort. It is a reminder of the darkness that Harry and his friends are fighting against.

7) Hermione Granger

Hermione suffering from the Cruciatus Curse was not shown in the movie. While Hermione, Ron, and Harry are taken to Malfoy Manor in Deathly Hallows Pt. 1, Hermione is tortured by Bellatrix using the Cruciatus Curse. Harry and Ron could hear her screams. Hermione writhed in pain as she struggled with the curse.

This was an intense moment. Bellatrix wanted to know the truth about how they were able to get their hands on the Sword of Gryffindor. She asked Hermione about how she was able to get inside her vault at Gringotts. Despite Hermione’s pleas, Bellatrix tortured her immensely.

Even though she survived the ordeal, it left an immense impact on her. It was a testament to Hermione’s strength and her deep bond of friendship with Harry. In the movie, she wrote Mudblood on Hermione’s hands as well.
