Director Osgood Perkins seems to be on a roll as after Longlegs being hailed as one of best Indie horror-thrillers of the year, he is ready with his next project.
The Monkey, Osgood Perkins’ next directorial venture, is based on Stephen King’s short story that first came out in 1980. Collaborating with King and James Wan, Perkins is expected to send shivers down the viewers’ spines.
The short story called The Monkey, follows two brothers who discover a toy monkey in the attic, playing a cymbal. Unfortunately, the unsuspicious brothers do not understand that every time the mechanical simian clangs its cymbals, someone close to them perishes.
Despite a number of King’s works, including classics like Carrie, IT, and The Shining being adapted to the screen, The Monkey has never been made into a film.
Here are all the details about The Monkey.
The Monkey release date
The Monkey is all set to release exclusively in the theaters on February 21, 2025. The film is expected to be one of the major headline grabbers in the first half of the coming year.
The Monkey Plot
Neon has not yet shared any official synopsis for the plot of The Monkey. However, Amazon does provide a summary of the book by Stephen King, on which the film is based on.
The summary goes like:
“Hal didn't know where it had come from, but every time the moth-eaten monkey with the strange yellow eyes clashed his cymbals, jang, jang, jang… somebody died. An irresistible urge had made him turn the key, but that was before he knew what it could do. He thought he had gotten rid of the evil thing once and for all. But the monkey had other plans for Hal.”
The Monkey cast
The protagonist in The Monkey is Theo James, who has previously worked in widely popular shows like The White Lotus Season 2 and The Gentlemen.
Another notable cast member in the movie is Elijah Wood of The Lord of the Rings fame. The Monkey also stars Tatiana Maslany, who has previously appeared in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Orphan Black etc.
Other cast members in The Monkey are:
Laura Mennell of Project Blue Book fame
- Sarah Levy of Schitt's Creek fame
- Christian Convery of Sweet Tooth fame
- Rohan Campbell of The Hardy Boys fame

Besides the ensemble cast, the film also has great creative minds behind it. James Wan is producing The Monkey. He has previously been associated as a writer, producer, and director with films like Saw, Malignant and The Conjuring.
Perkins, the director of the film, has already established a name for himself after Longlegs. Stephen King has long been the undisputed king of horror and adaptations of his work have mostly proven successful.
With The Monkey and its thematic similarity to the classic lore of Monkey Paws, the film has a lot of big names associated with it.
