The Life List mainly revolves around Alex's quest to fulfill all the things mentioned in the list, which she eventually manages to do. There is also a romantic subplot between her and Bradley Ackerman, aka Brad (Kyle Allen). However, she feels that she hasn't gotten true love. She ends up breaking up with her boyfriend, Garrett Taylor, because he is not appreciative of her. She eventually falls for Brad, who meets all four criteria her mother had raised. Towards the end, they end up together, giving a happy ending.

Not everything in Alex's life went well. Her relationship with her father remained strained since she was 13 years old. She feels he had been emotionally distant and was not emotionally available. But the two end up reconciling after her real father provides her with a different perspective on the matter.

Her mother's final wish forces Alex to go for all the things she once wanted to fulfill in her life. The ending showcases a personal growth in Alex. She manages to achieve a lot of things through her perseverance.

In an interview with USA Today, Sofia Carson spoke about her own bucket list. She echoed her character Alex's feelings of finding true love and said:

"Finding love is something that should be on all of our lists. Through this beautiful journey, (Alex) falls in love with herself. It's a journey that is scary, but that all of us should go on."

She also recalled how her mother sent her the script.

"I remember I was in a meeting and I get a text from my mom: 'Stop whatever you're doing and read this script. I might have read 15 pages in, and I just felt like I was reading something so special. I felt that in Alex Rose, I not only saw myself, but I felt that Alex Rose is all of us at some point in our lives when we feel like we're alive, but we're not living. And she kind of awakens us to life again."

Carson also says that there is no villain in the film, amid a love triangle.

The Life List is streaming on Netflix.
