What do we know about the plot?
The Dead Thing is centered around a character named Alex, a young woman who is disheartened by the monotonous and insincere nature of dating online. Alex’s life takes a sharp turn when she encounters Kyle, a mystifying and charismatic young lad who she builds an authentic connection with.
After spending a fiery night together, Kyle strangely vanishes, which then prompts Alex to go out in search of him. The investigation that she conducts eventually leads by to meet him but this time the meeting discloses an alarming secret that is supernatural.
The couple soon webs up together in a world filled with obsession and becomes entangled in a dangerous web of obsession, dependency, and fascination, with all of this leading to disturbing consequences.
The director, Elric Kane has described The Dead Thing as a mirror of the isolation and fatigue that often comes along with someone who looks into the world of modern dating. When giving out an interview with People Magazine, Elric Kane shared his vision for the film. He says:
"I worked in the very office the film is set in and a co-worker was always recounting her many adventures of online dating and the various apps and strange encounters she had […] It sounded exhausting but I wrote down a note on my phone 'Internet Dating App Horror??' and a few months later it led to a full idea for the film. I think people will relate to the alienation of dating and I think people often find themselves in sudden relationships that are empty or soul sucking as a way to escape the loneliness of modern dating and the fear of being alone."
