The Brutalist was the top contender for the Academy Award for Best Picture at the Oscars, but Anora beat it to the top. But then Adrien Brody, the lead who played Laszlo Toth in it, won the Best Actor's award, beating some fantastic performances by Timothee Chalamet in A Complete Unknown, Ralph Fiennes in Conclave, and more.
But the interesting fact is that we got to see Peaky Blinders' Luca Changretta and Thomas Shelby together on the stage; Brody and Murphy played their respective characters in the fourth season of the critically acclaimed TV series. Last year, Cillian Murphy stood there on the stage to collect the award for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer (2023). Now it was time for him to present it to his fellow actors for The Brutalist.
It was just a brief moment they shared together before Brody went on to give his speech that would go on to become the longest ever at the Oscars. They hugged, and Murphy was spotted saying something that was unclear as of now. We don't know if we'll ever see this moment again at the Oscars. So, better preserve it.
The Brutalist star seemingly received a little dose of praise from the Oppenheimer star
No one knows what Cillian Murphy said to Adrien Brody when the two Oscar winners interacted for a brief moment at the 97th Academy Awards. But lip-reading expert Jeremy Freeman had seemingly decoded it. The Mirror US reported that Jeremy thinks Murphy said,
"Man, you're bl***y brilliant."
Maybe Cillian Murphy hasn't talked about Brody's Peaky Blinders' character before but he once told The Hollywood Reporter that it was a dream role for him. He said,
"I’ve dreamt of playing that character as well. I wouldn’t have necessarily dreamt of writing that, so to speak, but I dreamt of finding, tonally, a role that was just like Luca Changretta."
Interestingly, that helped him in his portrayal of Clean in the 2021 movie of the same name.
We could've witnessed Cillian Murphy vs. Adrien Brody way before Peaky Blinders
Cillian Murphy never intended to be the titular Batman in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy; he thought he didn't really have the right physique for that kind of role. That role eventually went to Christian Bale, and Murphy thinks Bale is the best Batman, much like how Emily Blunt thinks Scarlett Johansson's the best Black Widow.
It was after the first film from the trilogy exploded at the box office that the anticipation for The Dark Knight (2008) began, where we saw Heath Ledger immortalizing the role of Batman's nemesis, Joker. But, Adrien Brody was supposedly interested in the role and he even met Nolan regarding the same, which he confirmed in 2010 in an interview with MTV News during the South By Southwest Film Festival.
While, again, we got the best actor, Heath Ledger, for the Batman nemesis Joker, Adrien Brody was interested in the role, and he even met Nolan regarding this, which he confirmed in 2010 in an interview with MTV News during the South By Southwest Film Festival.
Just imagine if they had joined forces; we could have seen them entering a cinematic rivalry way before the gang wars in Peaky Blinders. But then, never doubt Nolan. His decision to cast Heath Ledger made the now-deceased actor a legend and made it his penultimate role.
