Last time we checked, Finney broke the Grabber's neck while the voices on the telephone enjoyed; now, a new chapter awaits in The Black Phone 2. The first movie is an adaptation of one short story, part of 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill. Scott Derrickson is known for The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005) and Sinister (2012), too.

The first film's ending synced perfectly with Joe Hill's story, and there's no follow-up story. Except that Joe pitched the idea for the next film to Scott, which was impressive. Ethan Hawke (Dead Poets Society), Mason Thames (Incoming), Jeremy Davies (Saving Private Ryan), and more will be reprising their roles.

Commercially, The Black Phone was a huge success, with the film collecting $161 million on an around $18 million budget. It was especially praised for doing justice to the source material, though less frightening but more entertaining.

When will The Black Phone 2 be released?

The last update regarding the release says that the follow-up movie will hit the theatres on October 17, 2025, and open wide, which was first scheduled for June 27, 2025. Universal Pictures announced that last year in May, while also giving a glimpse at some other projects it shifted on the calendar.

Now, M3GAN 2.0 has taken up the June 27, 2025 slot, with How to Train Your Dragon clashing with it in the month. The Black Phone 2 shares October 2025 with Michael, a biographical musical drama based on the legendary Michael Jackson, whom his nephew, Jaafar Jackson, will play.

What is the plot of The Black Phone 2?

We don't know yet. But we know that whatever's brewing in there is quite fascinating, as Derrickon shared about The Black Phone 2 in one interview. He said,

"Joe Hill pitched me a wonderful idea for a sequel to Black Phone that, if this movie does well, I’m gonna do it. He’s got a great idea, I really liked it. Joe’s very protective and personal about his material, but he came to me with the idea and I was like, ‘That’s how you do a sequel to Black Phone. That’s terrific.'"

But there can be a range of possibilities, the first being exploring how the antagonist came into being. However, Mason Thames is returning, which indicates that it may follow his life after the traumatic incident he witnessed in the first. Scott confirmed that it will be a high school coming-of-age film. He addressed the original one as a middle school coming-of-age film.

The cast of The Black Phone 2

As confirmed, we will see multiple characters reprising their roles in The Black Phone 2, with Ethan Hawke returning as The Grabber, who abducted and killed children in his basement.

Then comes the lead, Mason Thames, who plays Finney. The Grabber didn't know he was abducting the kid, who eventually would become his end. Although, we cannot say for sure if that guy really died, given the return.

Miguel Mora, Madeleine McGraw, and Jeremy Davies will return to play Robin, Gwen, and Terrence, respectively. The other members of the cast include Demián Bichir, Rebecca Clarke, and Arianna Rivas, as per the listing on IMDb.
