Tatiana Maslany is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as She-Hulk in Avengers: Doomsday! This comes as a surprise to some fans, especially considering the mixed reactions to She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
The announcement stems from Maslany canceling her appearance at Comic-Con Liverpool, which immediately sparked online speculation. Now, reports confirm that she will be filming for Avengers: Doomsday, and her role is expected to be significant.
Maslany was originally scheduled to attend Comic Con Liverpool in May 2024. However, the event organizers announced that she had to cancel due to filming commitments. This immediately led to fan theories about her possible return to the MCU.
According to ComicBookMovie.com, after digging deeper, sources confirmed that Maslany is indeed involved in the upcoming film. The report stated:
“We’ve done some digging and, yes, it does indeed sound like Maslany will be busy shooting Avengers: Doomsday heading into the summer (production begins imminently) and that’s why she had to pull out of this upcoming event. For what it’s worth, we were also told her role is expected to be ‘fairly significant.’"
Tatiana's role in MCU so far
Maslany debuted as Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk, in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022). The show had a unique comedic and meta approach, breaking the fourth wall and addressing real-world issues like sexism in the workplace.
The series received mixed reviews. Some praised its humor and feminist themes, while others criticized the tone, writing, and CGI. Maslany acknowledged the backlash:
“I don't know because to this day, my comments on my Instagram back 40 weeks ago, they like to go in all over there. For me, what's so exciting is that Jessica Gao knew that was going to happen.”
She also pointed out how the show addressed the controversy directly:
“She wrote it into the show. There's something in She-Hulk that is looking out, and she's aware of the camera. She's aware of somebody watching her.”
Unlike the lighthearted tone of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Avengers: Doomsday is expected to be a darker and more intense film. This gives Maslany a chance to play Jennifer Walters in a more serious way, which could win over fans who weren’t sold on her first appearance.
Since reports suggest her role is “fairly significant,” She-Hulk could be one of the main heroes fighting in the upcoming Avengers battle. Given her connection to Bruce Banner (The Hulk), she might play an essential role in the story.
Jennifer Walters is not just a superhero, she’s also a top-notch lawyer. Some fans speculate that she might be involved in the legal or political side of whatever disaster unfolds in Avengers: Doomsday.
If She-Hulk is involved, it raises the question: Will Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) also return? The last time we saw him, he was mentoring Jennifer and introducing his son, Skaar. Their family dynamic might be explored further.
Maslany has been open about how she deals with online negativity. She acknowledged that She-Hulk was always going to be a polarizing project:
“Again, there are so many more interesting things that I can look to than vitriolic fan response where people don't like it or just want to be mean and use you as a dumping ground for their worst thoughts.”
One of the unique aspects of She-Hulk was its meta approach. Maslany noted that the character understands her place within the MCU:
“There's something about the inherent quality to that character that is self-aware and that understands her place within the MCU or within a series or a TV show or a scene or whatever, just like Jennifer Walters is aware of her place within the legal system and how she's struggling as a woman to be taken seriously or to be respected.”
Tatiana Maslany’s return as She-Hulk in Avengers: Doomsday is now all but confirmed. While her Disney+ series had mixed reactions, this movie gives her an opportunity to play a more serious version of the character. With a major role in the film, She-Hulk could prove her worth to the MCU’s future.
As Marvel heads into the next big Avengers event, She-Hulk’s involvement raises exciting possibilities. Will she become a core Avenger? Will Bruce Banner return? We’ll have to wait and see!
