Sturgill Simpson released his new album, Passage du Desir, which will be released on July 12, 2024. The album is his first work as his alter ego Johnny Blue Skies, with the singer elaborating on the matter in an exclusive interview with Qubuz on July 22, 2024:

"When I moved to Nashville, I had this kind of distinctly carved out five record arc that I wanted make five sort of conceptual country records that served. This is so heady and at this point. But yeah, so that was done. It was done. I finished the last record and always said, and I got to this point where, I don't know, like I wanted a.. I kind of wanted my name back to myself."

Sturgill Simpson continued:

"And then I realized I was always a big fan of the Derek and the Dominos record. And I thought that was a really neat concept that [Eric Clapton] hid behind a character to make a very vulnerable rock and roll record of love songs. And I don’t know if he would have done it with his name on it."

Sturgill Simpson continued:

"The name came from when I was in my early twenties. I'd gotten out of the Navy, and moved back to this town in Kentucky. And there was a bartender, this guy Dave, who, you know, wore, like a black trench coat and just stood outside, like, flipping a zippo all the time. And when I'd walk in every day, he would be like Johnny Blue Skies."

Sturgill Simpson continued:

"And I had to this day, I have no idea why. So when I did an anime film for a rock and roll record in Japan, it was, I put it under Johnny Blues Skies... mostly to answer your question, because the paperwork was already done. I own the name. "

Sturgill Simpson is best known for his third studio album, A Sailor's Guide to Earth, which was released on April 15, 2016. The album won the Best Country Album at the 2017 Grammy Awards.
