Ryan Coogler's Sinners offers so many things within its roughly two-hour duration. It is a vampire horror film set in the 1930s Jim Crow South, exploring the historical chapters with a style and swag of its own. This IMAX-shot film is filled with so many details that even in the second weekend of its release, it has led to so many insightful discussions. As it turns out, this is how Coogler envisioned this film to be under its initial working title, Grilled Cheese.

"I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees, and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention.”

So, the filmmaker wanted to make Sinners a singular experience. He had not thought of making a sequel or prequel while writing or shooting it. However, upon its release, the fans couldn't get enough of this full meal. So, they want more. Considering the growing sentiment toward a potential follow-up chapter, an interviewer from Total Film asked Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan if there could be a prequel exploring the past life of Smoke and Stack in Chicago when they faced Al Capone.

Jordan looked at Coogler first and then said,

"I mean, yeah, you know, I'll be up for it. Not saying he (director Ryan Coogler) wouldn't, but I would be up for it."

Jordan further added that it is up to Coogler to decide whether they would go ahead with a prequel.

"He calls the shots," said Jordan.

This is not the first time Ryan Coogler or Michael B. Jordan have been asked about a prequel or a sequel to Sinners. On April 21, during his conversation, Jordan shed light on the same subject. The interviewer referred to the announcement of the Once Upon a Time... in Hollywood follow-up project with Brad Pitt's Cliff Booth as the story's focus.

In line with this, he wondered if Smoke and Stack's story in Sinners could similarly have a prequel. It can trace their origins, not just in Chicago, but since their childhood, and as war veterans who enter the criminal world, eventually returning to their hometown to be with their lovers. At the time, Michael B. Jordan said,

"Early in the count for that one, man, but it is a testament to the characters in the world Ryan created. The world that exists in the history of Black American culture and the Deep South. When you watch good movies, you want to see where they’re going next and are curious about what happened before. And we want to see how they got there. To me, what you said means we made something that will resonate with people, but it might be too early to get into all that."

In the interview with Total Film, Ryan Coogler shared Jordan's thoughts regarding the curiosity about the characters' past and future.

"My favorite movies, it feels like a world was happening before and a world is going to happen after. So, that's the best compliment somebody can say."

Jordan adds,

"[It's great] that you care about the characters, see what happened to them before."

However, it's important to note that neither Coogler's nor Jordan's comments offer a confirmation about a prequel to Sinners. Jordan shows his willingness for a prequel but agrees that they will do so if Coogler thinks it warrants one. Instead, they see people's interest in knowing more about the characters as a sign of success since it means people resonate with their characters. They admit that it is always better if the audiences want more.

Ryan Coogler's Sinners is available to watch in theaters.
