The forthcoming Dennis Quaid-starrer crime thriller Sovereign is set to make its release on June 20, 2025, as reported by Deadline. Briarcliff Entertainment will be handling the film's distribution.

Helmed and penned by Christian Swegal, this film marks his directorial debut. Swegal wrote the 2018 film Proud Mary, alongside John S. Newman. The film stars Taraji P. Henson, Jahi Di'Allo Winston, Billy Brown, and many others. Along with this film, he has also written for two short films, Stasis (2010) and Solar (2015).

When is Sovereign releasing?

The film shall make its release this year on June 20, 2025. As reported by Deadline, the film is produced by the company All Night Diner, and Nick Moceri serves as the film's producer under this banner. Along with him, Valecroft and Concourse Media join him to produce the film.

All Night Diner has previously supported films, including A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014), and the 2023 film Sitting in Bars with Cake, to name a few.

At the time when Sovereign shall release, three more diverse and ambitious projects will also be released. The releases include Danny Boyle's post-apocalyptic horror 28 Years Later, starring Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ralph Fiennes, and many others.

Pixar Animation Studios' Elio will also be released in the same month, with the voice actors Zoe Saldaña, Yonas Kibreab, Brad Garrett, and Jameela Jamil. Bride Hard also joins the list, which stars Stephen Dorff, Anna Camp, Justin Hartley, etc.

The film follows the plot of a father-son duo, who are challenging the government systems, as they call themselves "Sovereign Citizens." However, they are engaged in a conflict with the police, which leads to catastrophic outcomes.

The story is based on a true event.

The synopsis of the film, as per IMDb, goes by:

"A father and son who identify as Sovereign Citizens, a group of anti-government extremists, find themselves in a standoff with a chief of police that sets off a manhunt."
