Sony Pictures drops official trailer for Jane Austen Wrecked My Life; reveals release date
The official trailer of Jane Austen Wrecked My Life has been dropped by Sony Pictures, and it looks refreshing and beguiling. The film is scheduled to release on May 16, 2025.
The trailer starts off with Camille Rutherford as Agathe, who seemingly works at a bookstore. It is established that Agathe is a lover of Jane Austen's works, as she is seen recommending Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibilities to a buyer. She states the book to be her favorite.
Agathe seeks a creative push as she is striving to be a writer. Things seem to fall in place for Agathe, as she is invited to England at the Jane Austen Writers' Residency. Meanwhile, she also appears to be on a blurred line between friendship and romance with her best friend, played by Pablo Pauly.
Much like a Jane Austen-esque world, Agathe too finds herself encountering a man at the residency, whom she is not fond of initially. Claiming to be the great-great-great-great nephew of Jane Austen, the man has some differing opinions about the author from Agathe.
The trailer progresses to reveal the central conflicts the storyline shall deal with. One ought to be Agathe's journey of self-discovery as a budding author and the complexities in her love life. It is evident that Agathe is caught between the affection of two men in her life.
Director Laura Piani also wrote the script for the film. We already witness Jane Austen's influence in the storytelling, as we see in Laura Piani's writing of the characters and their references. It certainly does not promise a quintessential love triangle.
Rather, much like Jane Austen's characters, it serves as a nuanced, complex, and layered lens into witnessing Agathe's pursuit as a writer as well as her emotional growth. As we see more movies about women, created by women, Jane Austen Wrecked My Life certainly brings about a big delight as well as intrigue.
There's an interesting moment in the trailer where Agathe's best friend says, "Mr. Darcy?" upon which there is a quick jumpcut to a ball-like sequence at the residency. We see Charlie Anson's character dressed up, resembling Mr. Darcy, a classic character in Jane Austen's iconic novel Pride and Prejudice. He and Agathe share a meaningful moment of eye contact.
In the course of the trailer, Agathe delivers these poignant lines:
"Literature is like an ambulance, speeding through the night to save someone."
