Ryan Gosling starrer Star Wars is in the works, confirms writer
Recently, writer Jonathan Tropper gave an interview to Collider where he confirmed that the forthcoming Star Wars film starring Ryan Gosling is in the works. Tropper, who is writing the film helmed by Shawn Levy for Lucasfilms said,
"That gig is something I’ve dreamed about my whole life. We’re still working on it. For various reasons, I can’t say anything about it. But we’re working on it."
Levy's previous film, Deadpool & Wolverine, was released in 2024 and grossed around $1.338 billion at the box office while also receiving a positive critical response. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the titular superheroes respectively, the film marked the return of Jackman into the world from which he had retired after Logan.
Not much detail about the next Star Wars film is out. The news of Gosling joining the cast was revealed in January 2025. We only know that it will be a standalone storyline and it might not feature Skywalker.
Deadline stated that the storyline will not be linked to the first nine episodes of the film. Levy is producing the film along with Kathleen Kennedy under the banners of Lucasfilms and 21 Lapse. Besides this project, two more Star Wars films are being developed by the studios. One of them is The Mandalorian and Grogu which will be out in 2026.
More about the Star Wars franchise
The franchise began with Star Wars, aka Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, which was released on May 25, 1977. Directed and written by George Lucas, it revolves around Luke Skywalker, in a fictional universe, as he tries to rescue Princess Leia from the Empire while also learning new things from Obi-Wan Kenobi. The film minted $775.4 million and kickstarted the media franchise.
Its sequel, titled The Empire Strikes Back was released in 1980, followed by Return of the Jedi in 1983. The last two films were not directed by Lucas who then went on to make the sequel trilogy: The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith.
Over the years, the franchise has seen several films, spin-offs, and sequels, this includes the prequel trilogy and sequel trilogy. The latter ended in 2019 with The Rise of Skywalker. There have been two standalone films as well as several animated and live-action television shows based on the characters from the original trilogy.
