Kendrick Lamar and Timothée Chalamet are two artists who have risen to the top of their respective fields over the past year. Kendrick came out on top of his beef with Drake, swept the Grammys, dropped an album, and will perform at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in New Orleans. For his part, Chalamet starred in Dune 2, turned in a career-defining role in A Complete Unknown, and hosted SNL for his fourth time.
In gearing up for his upcoming performance at the Super Bowl, a show that is expected to be viewed by an estimated 20 million people, the two sat down for a personal interview, dissecting what it means to be creative in today’s context and how they navigate making their art.
Fans were highly receptive to the interview, with some wondering what may be on the horizon for the pair.
"So are we expecting a collab or just a thirst trap for my sanity?" an X user wrote.

In the interview, Lamar and Chalamet cruise around in his signature car, the GNX (also the name of his most recent album). The two wax poetic about their respective fields, while sharing how they work through moments in which inspiration is harder to find. Kendrick shares that consistency is the key.
“That’s probably one of the biggest misconceptions about me as an artist, I’m always locked in, and I’m always trying new things — whether or not I like them is a whole ‘nother conversation. But I have to keep the pen warm.”
K Dot continued:
“It’s for my own sanity. [Writing] has also given me the opportunity to learn [about] myself, you know, find out who I am. When you’re writing, man, you’ve got to sit and go through the emotions and be vulnerable about it.”
The Compton rapper then shifted focus to his counterpart:
“How it feels if it’s been awhile for you? Do it take a minute for you to warm up in front of the camera or take a minute to remember the lines, get into the character?”
Timothée was candid in his response:
“All of the above, I try to prep at home. The thing about acting is, if you don’t have an audience, it’s just a form of insanity. And you’re just, what are you doing? So I definitely try to warm up and then, you know, lose that self-consciousness when you finally get back out there, But that takes time.”
The mutual respect between the two was clearly on full display, with Chalamet going into fanboy mode:
“Just being a fan of your music forever and knowing like, look where you’re at now, man,” Chalamet told Lamar. “It’s just crazy, Super Bowl halftime show. And you just keep climbing, bro. It’s like, amazing.”
