Sacrifice: Everything we know about Romain Gavras' upcoming English debut film starring Chris Evans

French director Romain Gavras is all set to make his English-language feature film debut with Sacrifice. It is a satirical tale written by Gavras and Will Arbery, who worked as a co-producer and writer on HBO's Succession.

Its central cast includes Chris Evans (Knives Out, The Avengers), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Menu, Furiosa), Salma Hayek Pinault (Frida, Desperado), and Sam Richardson (Veep, Ted Lasso). Taylor-Joy will play the central character who is motivated by her prophecy to save the world from an impending doom.

Iconoclast (Robert Walak, Jacob Perlin, and writer-director Romain Gavras), serve as the film's producers alongside Heretic (Giorgios Karnavas), and Mid March Media (Klaudia Smieja-Rostworowska and Gregory Jankilevitsch). Rocket Science and CAA Media Finance will take care of the film's international distribution.

Romain Gavras' Sacrifice, starring Chris Evans and Anya Taylor-Koy in the central roles, entered its production stage in Bulgaria and Greece according to the reports in November 2024. However, no specific release date has yet been revealed.

Sacrifice is an English-language film by French filmmaker Romain Gavras. He has previously worked on acclaimed projects like Athena (2022), and The World Is Yours (2018).

Its synopsis, per IMDb, reads:

"A star-studded charity event turns chaotic when a radical group crashes it, seeking a mystical artifact tied to an ancient prophecy."

According to Deadline, it will be a satire, roughly based on the classic Joan of Arc story. Furiosa-fame Anna Taylor Joy will play the central role of Joan, who hopes to save the world after her prophecy reveals the tragic fate of the world.

In this journey, she enters a lavish charity event with her disciples and takes three hostages - Mike, Katie, and Bracken, played by Chris Evans, Ambika Mod, and Vincent Cassel respectively. They are forced to embark on a journey through a forest to contemplate the fate of humanity.

The premise seems promising and in line with the previous work of its writers, Romain Gavras and Will Arbery. Gavras has worked on Athena, a politically charged turbulent action thriller and Arbery has worked on Succession, an intense satirical drama about a wealthy, entitled family. So, their pairing seems beneficial for the project.
