Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are coming back together again in the upcoming Joe Carnahan film RIP. The title doesn't suggest the expression of 'Rest in Peace' but is an informal term used by law enforcement when they seize cash, drugs, weapons, or any other illegal goods. Though some bad guys might end up dead, so RIP.

The actors have been longtime friends, whether on the screen in a film like Good Will Hunting (1997) or off the screen. That became more evident when this one time Ben Affleck sneaked Matt Damon in Jimmy Kimmel Live; the latter enjoyed it a lot. Kimmel? Not really.

They have collaborated on several projects, including Dogma (1999), The Last Duel (2021), Air (2023), and more, but this time is different. They are teaming up as cop buddies who are, as the title suggests, involved in ripping acts by law enforcement. They haven't done this together before.

Everything that's currently in light about RIP

There's no trailer yet, but a few details are in light, the first being Joe Carnahan helming the director's chair. The man has given us some high-octane and balls-to-the-wall action flicks like Smokin' Aces (2006), The A-Team (2010), Boss Level (2020), and more.

From what we know about Carnahan's statement to Tudum, both Damon and Affleck made the development one smooth ride. He said that,

"Working with Matt and Ben and having two, distinctly talented filmmakers, as both creative allies and the studio heads, wound up being the best of both worlds. I've never had as easy an experience on a movie as I had on RIP. They took exceptionally good care of me and backed my decisions every step of the way."

Moreover, Carnahan hinted to Affleck in a conversation about what the fans can expect from it.

Talking during a Netflix event attended by GamesRadar+, Affleck said,

"When I talked to Joe Carnahan, who directed it, he said this is going to be like Heat meets Narc meets Training Day."

So let's expect a 'My Man' in there.

Like Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, at this moment, we don't know who is playing whom in the film, but we do have the list of cast members who we will see in the film. Here's a list excluding Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Again, thanks to Tudum,

  • Steven Yeun
  • Teyana Taylor
  • Catalina Sandino Moreno
  • Sasha Calle
  • Néstor Carbonell
  • Lina Esco
  • Scott Adkins
  • Kyle Chandler

What is the film about?

Again, going by the Tudum interview, here's how they presented a brief synopsis of the film,

Upon discovering millions in cash in a derelict stash house, trust among a team of Miami cops begins to fray. As outside forces learn about the size of the seizure, everything is called into question — including who they can rely on.

Carnahan later goes on to explain how this film came into being. It was inspired by the real-life experiences of his friend, who was the head of tactical narcotics for the Miami-Dade police department. However, it wasn't mentioned if this guy is still in the same position.

This is something similar to Valiant One, whose director, Steve Bartnett, was inspired by a real event his one army friend had experienced.

As of now, there's no set date for the release, but it is set to arrive this Fall.
