Original 2025 horror movies releases and here's what we know about them

2025 has already kicked off with several horror movies making a mark at the box office. Nosferatu, Sinners, The Monkey, etc., has already generated excitement among horror enthusiasts, and the creators have no plans to stop yet. With directors, production houses, and writers pushing and exploring the genre, here are six original horror movies that promise to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

Him

Directed by Justin Tipping and produced by Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, Ian Cooper, and Jamal Watson, this psychological horror follows a young football player, Cameron Cade (Tyriq Withers), who is invited to train in an isolated compound of a celebrated quarterback, Isaiah White (Marlon Wayans). As he enters deeper into the training, he discovers a world of fame, power, and the thirst to achieve perfection at any cost. It releases on September 19, 2025.

Keeper

Produced by Chris Ferguson and Jesse Savath, director Osgood Perkins takes us through the life of Liz (Tatiana Maslany) and Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland), who embark on a romantic anniversary retreat to a remote cabin. After Malcolm suddenly abandons Liz, she is left all alone to fend for herself and soon confronts a sinister presence within the cabin. The movie releases on October 3, 2025.

Weapons

Starring Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, and Benedict Wong, director and producer Zach Cregger delves deep into the bizarre disappearance of schoolchildren. From the creators of “Barbarian” and “Weapons,” the star-studded cast sets out to unravel the terrifying secrets that lurk around them. The film is set to release on August 8, 2025.

Shelby Oaks

This film is the directorial debut of YouTuber Chris Struckmann, which gained attention for its successful Kickstarter campaign. This supernatural horror mystery is inspired by a fictional paranormal investigating team. Produced by Aaron B. Koontz, Cameron Burns, Ashleigh Snead, and Chris Stuckmann, this film stars Camille Sullivan, Brendan Sexton III, Michael Beach, Robin Bartlett, and Keith David. The release date in the United States is August 22, 2025.

The Ugly Stepsister

This body horror film is directed by Emilie Blichfeldt, who intends to bring a dark twist to the classic Cinderella tale. The movie premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival and was applauded for its theme and visuals. It stars Lea Myren, Thea Sofie Loch Naess, and Isac Calmroth in the lead.

Bring Her Back

The Philippou brothers return again after their critically acclaimed debut, “Talk to Me.” This horror focuses on siblings who are introduced to a new family with a petrifying secret. Set to release on May 30, 2025, this movie stars Sally Hawkins as the lead.
