One of the funniest Sonic the Hedgehog 3 scene was all Jim Carrey’s idea

The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has been amusing the Sonic fandom with its extensively high-energy mixture of action and comedy, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is no exception to the same. One noteworthy instant that has most of the sonic fans throbbing is a hysterically composed laser-dodging dance sequence featuring none other than the funny Jim Carrey.

His role as the character of Dr. Robotnik, Jim Carrey not only returns to his iconic role in this third installment i.e., Sonic the Hedgehog 3 but he also takes up a double role by playing Robotnik’s grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik.

What makes this scene even more impressive and funnier is that the scene was totally Carrey’s idea, which allowed him to showcase his creativity, intelligence, and commitment to conveying cherished moments to the big screen.


Jim Carrey’s Vision for the Dance Sequence in Sonic the Hedgehog 3

The now-celebrated dance scene in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 takes place as Dr. Robotnik and his grandfather pull on high-technological suits to evade a room full of laser security beams. However, instead of choosing the usual cautious approach, the duo erupts into a very detailed dance routine which was topped off with lasers bouncing off their suits in a perfect symphony.

To top off this amazing scene, the cherry on the cake was that according to the director of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Jeff Fowler, this arrangement was made as a personal request by Jim Carrey himself. In an interview with Cinema Blend, the director said -

“That's one of my favorite scenes, as well. That idea, the credit goes to Jim. He had done in the first film that one little scene in his mobile lab where he puts on the music and does a little dancing and then gets interrupted by Stone. In one of our very early conversations on movie three, he said, 'I want to dance again.' And I said, 'Great, let's do it.' "

He continued,

"So, if we were going to do it again, we were going to go big and literally double down on the dancing and have Ivo and Gerald there doing a duo. But it was so much fun to design that, to plan it. We had an amazing choreography team. We had amazing dancers. Everyone just brought their A-game and just delivered an amazing sequence.”

Behind the scenes of the hilarious sequence

The result that came out of this scene is now a comedic masterpiece in the Sonic Universe. Jim Carrey’s craft of bringing out physical comedy is put on complete display in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as he expresses the characters of both Robotnik and his grandfather while delivering to the audience a scene filled with amplified movements like this dance along with his signature over-the-top expressions.

Filming this iconic scene was no piece of cake. While filming the dance scene, the string involved one actor alone who kept portraying the role of playing two characters and this needed a certain level of precision and thorough planning. There were professional dancers brought on the set to choreograph Carrey’s dance moves to perfection in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

The production and set design team also had to perfect their use of laser effects to make sure that the sequence felt natural and visually appealing.

This sequence in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is timeless evidence of Jim Carrey’s supreme comedic talent and his aptitude to blend into any scene.

Fans of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 have praised Jim Carrey for this scene as it marks one of the most-funniest scenes in the film that by all means stands out.


Even though Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ends on an extremely vague note with regards to Robotnik’s future, Jim Carrey’s involvement in the Sonic Universe makes sure his legacy as Dr. Robotnik. It is unsure at this point if Jim Carrey will return, but fans of Sonic the Hedgehog will be talking about his dance moves in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 years.
